by Beat The GMAT, Dec 25, 2011

This article is part of a 10-part series where we will be highlighting the most popular GMAT stories of 2011 from the Beat The GMAT community, in countdown fashion.

While the business school crowd keeps getting younger and younger, there's certainly no shortage of exceptional people over 30 who are taking the GMAT and achieving their MBA dreams. One such person is hsparmar, a 44 year old Army Colonel with 700 hours of helicopter flying experience! If you think that qualifies as an exceptional profile, you need to also take into account that the last time hsparmar had any formal math or English courses was 27 years ago and he's a non-native speaker. Given the above, his story titled FROM 530 TO 640 TO 710 (Q49 V36 AWA 6.0): BY AN ARMY COLONEL truly stands out. Here's an excerpt:

If all else fails - please remember that GMAT is not the end of things in life - only one in ten gets past 700, other nine do not ! So, you are not alone. People with sub-700 also get admitted to H/W/S if you have it in you, else even a 800 (or a near 800 score) is no guarantee in this highly competitive world ! Unfortunately, most of us do not take failures easily. It is important to carry out a realistic assessment of your skills/ capabilities so that you are not disappointed. Others worked for their good scores, so can you.
