Are MBA Programs Only For Older Candidates?

by Stacy Blackman Consulting, Nov 6, 2010

Individuals often ask what the right age is to attend business school. Unlike in the past, top MBA programs have recently begun taking a closer look at younger candidates. There are a number of explanations for this. One reason is that some candidates may be so successful a few years out of an undergraduate university that they would not consider going back for an MBA degree. MBA programs would be missing an opportunity to admit some very talented individuals. Additionally, some applicants may appear to be ready for an MBA program directly out of college. Some may have founded businesses in school or gained work experience through other areas. Yes, some MBA programs are more likely to consider less experienced candidates, but this does not mean that younger candidates overall have a better chance of being accepted.

Candidates with less work experience will face adversity. These candidates will need to put in more effort to prove that they have the confidence and ability to excel in business school. Unfortunately, reading The Economist since high school will only help you so much; personal experiences are far more important to other students classroom experiences. Lastly, younger candidates will need to convince MBA programs that they have focused goals and strong reasons for going back to business school so recently after having graduated.

Likewise, older candidates will also face adversity. Older candidates need to show that it is the right decision to return for an MBA at this point in their career. Individuals will also have to show that they have strong work experience. Candidates should demonstrate advancement, contributions, and a high level of maturity. A 40-year-old candidate who has spent over a decade in the same position will have a difficult time being accepted into a top MBA program. However, this is not because of their age or experience. Instead, it is because the person may have not demonstrated growth during that period.

Older or younger, if you can achieve the above, you will have a good opportunity at being accepted into a program that is right for you. You should not be worried about your age. Your age should never be the sole deciding factor when considering an MBA program.
