Profile evaluation + big dillema! :(

by hashy » Mon Jul 11, 2011 3:42 am
Hey am a troubled soul and in a fix. I am yet to take the GMAT.

GPA: 2.9
Major: IT
IndustryEx:
1. Working as a Developer with Aricent(good telecom solutions provider)
2. International Experience of 2 months with Nokia Siemens Networks
3. Under-grad internship with Avaya(also a big telecom company)

My GMAT is on the 20th of September and I would like to really do well in that. My questions are:
1. I want to resign from my current job so that I can study well for the GMAT. Would it be Ok to do so? If yes, would my work ex suffice for good colleges in Europe/UK/Asia. I am not targeting the big league colleges.
2. What should I do to make my profile stronger and more distinctive?

thanks for your time!

Hashy

Hashy,

It's not a good idea to quit your job to prep for the GMAT. Unemployment adds a question mark to your profile. It sounds like you need more work experience and more leadership (at work and outside of work -- you didn't mean extracurriculars).

Good luck,

Paul,

Thanks for the reply. :) My apologies for not mentioning the correct details!!(was a nervous wreck the time I posted the question!)

I have an experience of 2 years 9 months. I have decided on not resigning from my current job and taking the GMAT head on!!

How can I improve my profile further? I have been trying for "Consultant" roles but am unable to get them. I am part of a Social Welfare group; would that help?? I understand that these things would matter once I start with the application process and my first concern should be scoring well. Still I would appreciate your help on this. :)

Thanks a ton!

Hashy

Hashy,

Commit yourself to a leadership role outside of work, hopefully one in which you already have a longstanding history. Don't worry about the professional side.

Good luck,

Hi Hashy

If you wish to apply to top business schools then one of the prerequisites is having significant work experience. Generally candidates have around 4-5 years of full time experience in spite of several term time projects or jobs; so you may be competing with other candidates who have 4-5 years of full time experience and have started significant initiatives at college.

Hence, we would advise you to gain some full time work experience before you decide to apply for an MBA. If you don't wish to do so them, you could look at the HBS 2+2 program or the Yale Silver Scholars program. Although you might need to prove to the admission committee that your GPA won't be an issue. If you can tell in your application about the skills that you gained at work and beyond in the areas you had scored low would put you in better position. You need to indicate a positive learning from your bad experience. If you took any extra classes or courses in the subjects that you din't do well and highlight your zeal to learn and improve it could also improve your low GPA situation.

Hope this helps.

Hi FutureWorks :)

I have full time work experience worth 2years 9 months. I am not planning to quit my current job. The problem is that I have to show some significant leadership qualities to make my profile look more attractive. I already am part of a social group. But as Paul has mentioned above, I need to look towards better leadership roles.

Thanks for your concern and suggestion. :)
