Hi there,
I was quite happy to receive a 720 on my GMAT recently with a breakdown of Q47 (76%) and V42 (95%).
However, after reading some posts from various forums, I noticed people worrying about their quant score being below the 80th percentile (I think Q47 used to get you 82% according to the pages in OG12, but I guess the average has since risen.)

I am aiming for the top 10 schools and have taken quant courses in my undergrad and gotten B's.

Will being at the 76th percentile in Quant be an issue for schools like Berkeley, Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern, MIT?

Thank you.

Fenni,

Your quant split may not be an issue. It would be hard to give you a thoughtful response without knowing about your total profile. Perhaps you have a stellar gpa, perhaps your job performance has been stand out and numbers driven...

The best advice is ask yourself if you left meat on that gmat bone. If the answer is no, and you got about the best you expected to get on the quant based on practice tests, then leave it alone and focus on other application components. But if you can bump up the score, then yes reconsider taking the test so as to maximize your chances if you are shooting high in the rankings.

Well to make sure, it's always good if you have other quant stuff in your profile. So if you are building algorithms the whole day, that's a winner, or working with complex finance tools etc. But it's a relatively minor issue. Have a low verbal as a foreigner looks less good.

Thank you both Alex and Precision Essay for your responses. This is definitely helpful!

I majored in Finance in undergrad and did some quantitative courses...marks in the B's and I will try to highlight my analytical skills at my management consulting job where I have done things like run queries, spreadsheet analysis, benefit calculations, business cases, etc.

Much appreciated!

If you had been scoring 750+ on practice exams and feel the 720 was especially low then you could retake the test since schools only factor the highest score.

However, if you are applying this year, better to focus on producing the best application possible as a 720 is still a good score.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for the tips! I am applying this fall and I WISH I was scoring 750+ on all my practice exams, lol, but unfortunately that was not the case.

I think I will stick with this score then for this year.

Cheers!

Then forget about your GMAT score and now concentrate on building the best application possible.
