Profile Evaluation

by nanchi_guy » Mon Sep 22, 2008 12:01 am
Hello,

I have been working as Database Admin ( Information Technology) for the last 5 years with less leadership/ management experience and

Here is my profile:

Undergrad - 2.8 GPA (raw conversion of 70% of marks from an indian university)

This , i know, is really a poor GPA. but i have an explanation. The medium of instruction for whole of my schooling (that includes high school too) was in my mother language. Where as the medium of instruction in my undergrade was English. It took sometime to get adjusted and there is a evidence of proof too as i maintained 2.6 GPA for the first two years and little better 2.92 GPA for the last two of years of undergrad.

Masters - 3.0 GPA from New Jersey Inst of Tech ( not a steller perfornce here too, but i dont need to explain, i hope!)

Work Experience : Total 5 years. 3 years of working experience in India as Database Admin ( IT ) and 2 years working experience in USA as Database Admin again (at IBM and KPMG) . Led couple of small sub projects.

Community Service : Did some community service during my high school days ( teaching uneducated people to read and write in their mother language) and continued it in undergrad too ( organized couple of yout leadership camps) . Did some community service during masters as a tutor for underprivileged high school kids ( organized by the NJIT ).

GMAT : planning to take early next year and expectin a 700 - 740 score.

I am planning to apply for 2010. Hence considering my low GPA, i planning to take some extra courses in Quants ( statistcs, calculus etc) and in management ( Accounts, microeconomics etc). I hope i will score A's in all those extra courses. As i have 2 more years to go , i belive i can add more community services too into my profile.

Last but not least, i do want to stay in IT after MBA, so i want to do technology oriented concentration like Management of Infromation Systems/ Genl Management.

1.what is my chance of getting admitted into any one of the following schools?

Cornell, CMU ( Tepper ), MIT, Yale and UV Darden.

2.I will turn 31 and no of years of experience will be 7.5 while applying for B-Schools in 2010, is that too old to get admitted into those schools i mentioned in my last question?

3.Please suggest me some safe/backup schools.

Thanks ,
Nanchil

Dear Nanchil,

Without knowing your GMAT, it is hard to comment on your chances at specific programs. I do think it is a good idea to take courses and start participating in community service activities now. You will not be too old in 2010, so do not spend energy worrying about that. I also think you need to seek out managerial experience in your company and start to build some transferable skills over the next 2 years. As an IT professional, it will be important for you to start redirecting your career to a more business-oriented role.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks Lisa .

Thats what i was thinking , getting some team leader position or some kinda management role will help my profile look well rounded, But , hey i am a poor IT consultant you know, most of the times doin the technical job. Anyway i will try my best.

do you really think that alternate GPA will alleviate my poor undergrad GPA? thats really good to know.

i do know that without having actual GMAT score, guessing at school admits is like shooting at dark. So what you think is a good GMAT score for my profile which will enhance my chances of getting into any of the TOP 20 B-Schools?

well, i really appreciate you help.

Thank,
Nanchil

Dear Nanchil,

I think it will be difficult to get into any top 20 schools with a GMAT score over a 700. For schools in the 20-50 range, I think you might have a shot with a score at or above a 670.

Good luck,
Lisa

Am i reading it right? even a 700+ score wont help me to get into say 15 - 20 ranked school?

or you meant to say ' I think it will not be difficult ...'?

I really appreciate your promptness, you people are rocking!!

Thanks,
Nanchil

Sorry! You're right. I meant to say, "I think it will be difficult to get into any top 20 school without a GMAT score over a 700." Meaning you will need a 700+ GMAT to be competitive for a top 20.

Please accept my sincerest apologies.

Thanks for the clarification Lisa. There's no need for an apology , it was just a typo.

You guys are doing great to help the MBA wannabe's community. If you ask me, i would say you can put this down under your community service column, if you are applying for an MBA program ( if you haven't got one already, ofcourse).

Thanks,
Nanchil
