Hello, I had a question about selecting my recommenders. I've read that the most preferable recommender is your direct supervisor. Is this the person who reviews your performance yearly and who you report to in the corporate hierarchy, or the person who you leads your team and who you report to daily?

My issue is that I do not interact daily with the person I report to on our hierarchy, but I work daily with my team lead but my team lead and I report up to the same person.

Is it better to ask my team lead or my reviewer for a recommendation? My team lead knows me better and does supervise me, my reviewer has a higher title and I report to him on the corporate hierarchy.

Thanks in advance.

Dear bschoolbound,

I think the Team Lead is the better choice as s/he works with you on a daily basis. S/He probably also gives your boss on the hierarchy feedback on your performance. Schools are not concerned with the title your recommender has--they want recommendations from the folks who know your work best.

Good luck,
Lisa
