Dear Admission Consultants,

I am a 30 years old italian lawyer. I have a law degree from a well-known italian university with an equivalent gpa of 3.5 or above (I graduated with 110 on a maximum of 110) and I hold a master degree (LL.M. in international maritime and business law) from Tulane University Law School.

I worked for 5 years in my family's company (I built a door to door distribution system on my home town territory and I took care of the relationship with suppliers, banks and accountants) and I have 3 years of experience as a lawyer, practicing on several matters such as litigation, commercial and business law.

I am almost ready to make my gmat test and, if I'll score a 700 or more (I try to feel confident!!!!), I would like to apply for a top ten business school, harvard, london bs, wharton, stanford, columbia. My career goal is to work for a pharmaceutical industry or in a business consulting firm.

Frankly, I am in the middle of a personal crisis. I am not satisfied with my actual work, which does not provide me a good salary and career perspective, but, on the other hand, what scares me the most is the actual economic situation and, particularly, the italian situation. I tried to get into a pharmaceutical factory but all the doors were closed.

In conclusion, my questions can be summarized as follows:
1) is this the right time to invest 100 k euros in further education?
2) Do I have any chance to get in a top ten BS?
3) Can an MBA give me the opportunity to professionally grow in an international environment?

Looking forward to hearing your answers, I thank you in advance for the time and consideration you will deicate to my post.

If I knew the answers to these questions with utter clarity and total confidence I probably wouldn't be responding on this board. :-) With that caveat, I'll give it my best shot. Here goes:

1) That is extremely difficult to answer. It may be a great time because you could graduate as the economy is taking off. In the meantime, we are hearing rumors that application volume is flat or down, which means it may be easier to get into top programs. Please see "The Financial Crisis: Danger or Opportunity".
2) Yes especially if you do well on the GMAT.
3) Yes, but it will not guarantee you a position in the pharma industry when you graduate. The good news is that pharma has been stronger than other traditional MBA sectors.

Best,
Linda

Dear Mrs L. Abraham,

I would like to submitt to your attention the following questions:

1) Based on my law background and my professional career (I did not work for a big and well-known law firm, I have always worked for boutique firms), would you suggest me to apply for a specialized program or for a more general one?

2) Considering my profile, do you think it would be better to get an mba in a european school or in a U.S. schoool?

Looking forward to receiving your answer, I send you my kind regards.

Andrea

Andrea,

1) The answer depends on your post-MBA goals as well as your current strengths. If you see yourself in a general management role, then go to a school strong in general management. If you see yourself focusing more in a particular function, then go to a school strong in that function. You mentioned that you want to work in pharma, you can also seek a school with good ties to pharma (Columbia, Stanford, Duke, Kellogg come to mind.)

2) If you want to work in Europe immediately after your MBA, then go to a European school. If you want to work in the US immediately after your MBA, then consider a US business school.

Best,
Linda
