profile evaluation request

by Bshlom » Tue Oct 11, 2011 9:46 am
I have applied/am applying to Wharton, CBS, NYU & UCLA during Round 1 for admission in Fall 2012 and would love some feedback on my profile, as well as where I should set my expectations. Obviously the essays and letters of recommendation will have a significant impact and can't be judged from the information below. Please consider my profile under the assumption that both the essays and letters of recommendation are very strong.

26 year old male w/ 5 yrs of work experience(as of 8/2012)
GMAT: 690 (45Q/39V, 6.0 AWA). I think this is my weakest section of the application.

Work Experience:
2 yrs at big 4 audit firm working on large broker-dealer audits (Bear Stearns & Morgan Stanley)
3 yrs as a risk management associate at a multi-billion dollar long-short equity hedge fund. manage and trained 2 people in a 4 person group. Company has <50 employees.

Licenses:
CFA, CPA

Undergrad:
University of Maryland, B.S. Accounting
3.9 Overall GPA
4.0 Accounting GPA

Post-MBA Career Goals:
Short-term - buy side research analyst
Long-term - launch my own value investing fund

Hobbies/Activities:
Junior Achievement Volunteer
Investing
Huge Sports "Dork"
This area is admittedly weak due to the time spent studying for the CFA & CPA exams. Hopefully AdCom will notice this.

Other:
Dual Citizenship (US & Israel)

I appreciate your input and look forward to your response.

Happy New Year.

In terms of your profile, while you have some strong assets, like your GPA and management experience of direct reports, your profile as stated is not one where you can count on getting into a top 5-7 school. Good to see NYU down there as well, and I would encourage you to look a broader range of schools if now is the critical juncture for you to go to B school. That being said, you are only 26, and could reapply in 1-2 years with perhaps an outside of work leadership experience, improved gmat, and other application enhancements.

But of course as you say, it's hard to make a complete assessment given I don't know how active you have been as a side investor, did you see military service in Israel.....

Hope that helps,

Alex

The CFA designation is a big strength. Wharton is a bit of a stretch with your GMAT score. If you applied Columbia Early Decision you have an excellent chance. You are very competitive for UCLA and NYU Stern as well. Given your goals, I think you should consider applying to Chicago Booth 2nd round (considering the deadline is tomorrow) if you are not successful at the other schools.

Good luck,
