Which schools to apply to?

by gujralvikas » Fri Aug 10, 2012 11:52 pm
Hi All,

I am planning to apply for the Fall 2013 intake and need help shortlisting schools. I am interested in building a career in Management consulting. For shortlisting US schools, I am only interested in schools which offer loans without any co-signer. Currently, I am looking at Kellogg, Booth, Tuck, Fuqua, Darden and Ross. Any thoughts/comments/help is appreciated.

LOVE your profile dude. 760. Top of your class. You are good to go. All you need know is good essays :)
As for your school list it is a good one. Although to be honest, ANY top program in the world is good for your proposed goals, so you have to think about choosing them with your other, and more personal criteria. So loans is important for you, which is totally understandable, but coursework, ambiance, location, etc. should all come into play. But otherwise, honestly, take your choice

Thanks Jon. However, I mentioned Topper and scholarship holder of my 'High School'. Although, I did graduated with an honors degree (granted to students with >8 GPA), I was not among the toppers.

One question that I have is regarding the post-college activities. I read it somewhere that Adcoms are more interested in activities you did after your college. After college, I have been closely involved with my work and did not get much time to pursue any other activity. I did try to get involved in some community welfare activities but could not find a nearby place where I can volunteer over the weekend. I, however, did pursue my travelling passion, as mentioned in my profile, after college. Will this affect my application? Could you give me some examples regarding what sort of post-undergrad activities do people mention on their applications? Thanks again.

I would not say that there is a hands-down rule in which after-college stuff is worth more than college stuff. Actually the ideal application will have involvement and leadership at every stage of the game, and the more impressive the involvement or leadership or results, the more overall effect it will have on your application. It's not going to "affect" your application, in that it is not something you need to explain. Yes, it would have been better if you had more, maybe, but that is always the case. Here, you use just a strategy of omission, in which you would put more emphasis on the great stuff you DID do in college.

As for what people have- normally a range of activities, but classically, volunteering in all sorts of ways, be it soup kitchens, mentoring kids, working with the blind.... the most impressive activities tend to have leadership especially when you are the one leading initiatives)so if you are organizing a 5000$ a plate political dinner and get 3000 people to come, yes that will impress the heck out of all!)
