Marketing/Consulting in Canada? Rotman vs. Schulich?

Hi guys,

I am making a trip the next few days to Toronto, and want to know which schools are good for Marketing and Consulting specialization. Would like to go for a campus visit.

My profile:

25/Female/Indian - Will have 4 years+ experience at matriculation next year August 2013, majority being family business experience in Real Estate, prior to which I was a software developer. I currently handle all the marketing functions, without a pure business background (I am a Computer Science Engineer) so I want to learn General Management and specialize in New age marketing and secure a consulting related role post MBA.

I reached out to Rotman, and it seems they are good enough for Consulting overall, and about 15% of the class goes into Marketing. The curriculum looks good to me, but I am puzzled about Schulich.

Does anyone have experience applying to these schools?
Any current students?
How about post MBA opportunities given the 3 years work permit in Canada?

Or do you suggest I'll be better off targeting US or Singapore schools instead?

Hey,

I am applying to Canadian B Schools also this fall and will be targeting consulting post MBA.
I have a similar profile as yours. (26/M/Indian/Computer Science Engg/5 yrs WE by Aug '13).

I have submitted my application to Rotman and got an interview invite.

Did you find out more about Schulich and opportunities post consulting ?

Did you get a chance to visit the school ?

Have you submitted your applications yet ?

Hi there,

No I am not applying this year, for want of a better GMAT score. I visited Rotman back in July, it was good overall, though it was internship season and no classes were happening. Spoke to a current student in Consulting, it seemed pretty good. Rotman is very strong in Consulting, as you may already be aware of.

I couldn't visit Schulich, and have no idea about its strengths, though I would suggest go with Rotman, if you are serious on attending B-School in Canada. Good luck with admissions.

Which other schools you applying to?

Hi,

Thanks for your inputs. I haven't applied to any school in Canada apart from Rotman yet. Just as you, I am inclined towards Rotman too. There is a lot of debate of Rotman vs Schulich in forums and many believe Schulich to be at par (if not better !) with Rotman. Its cheaper as well. These two are the only schools I am considering in Canada right now as they offer an internship opportunity, and since I have no Canadian work experience I want a program with internship.

The fact that turns me off from Schulich is that it decides to admit some students without even taking an interview, even for students with a "not so hot" profiles ! I am a bit skeptical of the peer group at this school and fail to understand how it can do so well as the statistics show. I'll research more about it though.

I will probably wait for my Rotman decision before applying to Schulich. Beside these, I have applied to ISB and will apply to Nanyang and NUS. I haven't applied to any US B Schools this year.

When are you planning for your GMAT ? If soon enough, you can still apply in this application cycle !
Canadian Schools accept applications till very late in the season. When you know you want to attend a B School, it absolutely sucks when you have to wait one more extra year !

I am current Schulich student. I can tell you two things, (One) if you are looking for consulting in marketing then you have to go to Schulich. All major marketing professors are from Schulich, plus at Schulich you get to do a live consulting project called 601, something that Rotman doesnt offer. (Two)you can argue who is better all day long, at the end of the day Schulich grads get the same jobs having spent on tuition a lot less :)

I agree, Schulich's selection process seems a bit 'diluted', I have heard this a lot of times before. Anyway, better to wait it out till you apply, as you said.

As for me, I am not forced to apply next year, though the GMAT did throw me off a bit. I figured I would do well with another year of experience, so I'll be taking the test over the next couple of months, and applying in 2013-2014.

I too was thinking of applying to India/Asia and Canadian schools 2 years back, but since then have expanded my options to include the U.S which still offers a great MBA experience, esp Marketing schools. So, good to know you're targeting Singapore, I'm interested in NUS. Let me know about your application progress via PM. (Plus some GMAT tips wouldn't hurt ;) )

Thats what's keeping me interested in Schulich ;)
