Hi,

This is the first time I post here and hope you can help me evaluate my profile because I do not have any ideas about my chances of getting into a top 10 BS.
Here is my detail
Nationality: Vietnam
Undergraduate : Major in Telecommunication. The top technical university in Vietnam.
GPA: 3.1
GMAT: 740 (Q51,V38)
Age : 33 at matriculation
Other credentials:
IT : some certificates of Cisco
Finance: CFA
Experience: 11 year at matriculation
- 4 years in IT field
- 7 years in investment field.
Extracurricular:
- Captain of my company's futsal team. Won many prizes of Competitions of IT Association.
- Lecturer of CFA program.
- Parachuting

Other:
- At high schools, I won first prize of the National Physic Examination. Should I include this achievement in my application. I know that the achievement at high school is not important.

Purposes: Attending a good MBA in Finance and continue to pursue career in financial investment industry.

Please advice that whether I have chance with a top 10 BS and which school is most appropriate to my profile as well as my career goal.

Thanks in advance.

Hi PMT! Welcome to Beat the GMAT! Let's see if we can offer some input into your questions.

First off, your GMAT score is great, congrats on that achievement. That can open some doors for you, for sure. The GPA is a little low but we're wondering where you came up with that number? Our understanding is that Vietnam uses a 10-point scale. If you did the conversion yourself, it's possible that it's off (we'd need to know a lot more, obviously, in order to say for sure - grades are one major area we dive into extensively in the Comprehensive Profile Review that we offer: https://essaysnark.com/tutorial/comprehe ... le-review/ ).

Your background looks appropriate for an MBA however you may be aware that you're a bit older than average. Many top bschools have different preferences for the age of their candidates, and you're pushing to the outside edge of what some schools care for. Of course, it depends on the strength of your profile and your reasons for wanting an MBA, and why now is the right time - it's unfair for anyone to just say categorically that you're "too old" for an MBA without knowing your whole story, but you should be aware that some schools prefer those who are younger. The Executive MBA programs are geared more towards older candidates, so you might want to keep those on your radar as you do your research.

The fact that you have your CFA is also impressive, and that you've already transitioned to investing - this will definitely help you different yourself from other candidates who started out in IT. This tells us that you're very motivated, and you're an interesting and diversified candidate (at least, we're assuming as much! we're working on limited information here obviously).

We can't really advise on which school is a good fit - a lot needs to go into that assessment, but just based on this initial info, we are guardedly optimistic for you. You are definitely qualified for a top program and you have some interesting things going for yourself. The different schools have different selection criteria and different priorities, and like we said, the age may be a factor for you, but as a general statement, yes, you should be All Systems Go right now!!

If we can help with specific questions, feel free to let us know - or maybe you'll go for our profile review and we can give you a much more detailed response into how things could shape up for you.

Hi PMT,

You work experience, GMAT score and extra currics ( certifications etc) all look good and make your profile strong. But since you have more than 11 years of experience US schools might not be interested. US schools rarely take candidates with more than 9 years of experience. Consider the following programs:

NUS
Nanyang
HKUST
HKU
INSEAD
Oxford Said
Judge
HEC Paris
