Profile Evaluation Request

by safina » Fri Jan 17, 2014 5:00 am
Hi,

Can any of the experts help me with my profile evaluation:
28 F India
Undergraduate in hospitality (no GPA's but among the top ten in college - have certificates to prove that. In % terms, about 78% - (I dont know how that maps to GPA, though).
22 month experience working with hotels, later changed careers, moved to finance, joined a leading finance firm in India as an intern in 2008 (studied all finance courses part time during internship), got confirmed with them as an analyst in 2010, promoted to senior analyst in 2012. My work is hard core finance working with leading US companies. Overall 5.5 years exp. in finance plus additional 22 months in hotels.
Job Responsibility - During my hospitality days, led a team of 10 odd people, but in finance I am part of a team (although a senior member now and provide lot of mentoring to juniors, hold training sessions, guide and review their work). Additionally, I have some cross border work exp. (I was in NYC for three months and worked directly with my US team members). I have also worked for brief time period with European analysts - so some cross border work experience involved there.
Pursuing my CFA along with work..cleared Level II last year, yet to give L3.
Extra curriculars - Good debator in school/college (have certificates), involved in adventure trips (river raftings, marathon's, treks etc). At work ,I am involved in the Employee Engagement Team and organize fun events for employee motivation plus channelize their grievances to the concerned authorities.
GMAT - Still studying. Aiming for 700 (but do you think 670-680 would be ok?)
Target Colleges - Wharton, NYU, Darden, Duke, Emory, Cornell

Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks for your help.

Safina,

Unfortunately, you will want as high a GMAT score as possible (considering Indians score among the highest on the GMAT and you will be compared to other Indian applicants).

What are your short and long term goals? Also, from which undergraduate institution did you graduate?

This will help me give feedback on your profile.

Thanks,

Hello Michael,

Thank you for your reply. Here is some additional information:
Short term goal - enter into consulting in the energy space as an associate (I have been working in the energy sector for almost 5 years now and I enjoy the sector).
Long term goal - My husband is in energy consultancy and we plan to start our own venture (not so soon though, we still would prefer to gain experience and then enter into private consultancy).
Undergraduate - I under graduated from Institute of Hotel Management, Pusa, New Delhi (govt college, best ranked in hotel mgmt).

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

Depending on your GMAT score, you might wish to add schools like Haas (https://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/academics/energy.html), UCLA Anderson (PGE recruits here https://www.pge.com/about/careers/college/mbaleadership/) and Ross and McCombs (https://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/mba/full- ... gy-finance).

Thanks Michael. Currently, the GMAT mocks I have given, I have scored around 650 but I am confident of scoring above 700 (since I am scheduling my exam in March and still have a month to brush up my study material).
Can you add little bit further on my profile as in do you see any particular strengths and weaknesses? Since I will apply for 2015 MBA, I have sufficient time to work on some weaknesses to make my application stronger. More specifically, if you have come across students from unconventional backgrounds but with relevant work experience (I work with Standard&Poor's, which has a strong brand name and I can manage some strong recommendations), who have made it in some of the top colleges? I just want to get a sense if I am being overly ambitious on my selection of colleges?

Thanks again for your replies!!

Is your 78% a First Class with Distinction or First Class?

Some of this advice is generally applicable to other candidates, seek more leadership responsibilities within your work and in community service. Seek greater global experience. Seek projects that align with your future goals. In your case, that would mean to try and be staffed on internal consulting projects in which you start to grasp consulting methodologies and strategic frameworks while gaining more softer skills like collaboration, influencing, etc.

But the big thing is to score as high as you can on the GMAT.

Good luck,

Its only First class (transcripts do not mention distinction). But I scored 6th (All India Level). I have been a gold medalist in school (Class XII - topped my school and received highest marks in economics & english). Received 20000 scholarship from Andhra State Govt.

But I agree with you, its the GMAT that will really count in my case.

Thanks again!
