Please help evaluate my profile

by GovEsq13 » Mon Mar 26, 2012 11:38 am
Hello,

A bit about my background... I graduated undergrad with a 3.0 GPA in History. Afterwards, I went to law school where I graduated with a 3.09. I've spent the last 2.5 years working as an attorney for a state agency doing civil litigation (no business or corporate exposure. The one or two math classes I did take back in college I didn't do too well in the math courses I took ( B minuses for both) On the GMAT I scored a 720 (Q49,V40). I am really interested in Kellog's program. Harvard would be nice, but I figure that is out of reach given my subpar grades. How competitive would I be for Kellog and other similar caliber programs? Should I take some quantitative courses at a local college to make up for my poor math exposure? Thanks in advance!

Hmmmmm very hard to say without more info. A 720 and a 3.0 is pretty good, and a lot will depend on your work experience volunteer work and extra curriculars, so maybe you can fill us in a little bit more about that? Thanks for your response. In terms of work experience, I manage my own cases from inception all the way to the conclusion of trial. My greatest accomplishment to me was winning my first trial in spite of having some unfavorable facts in my case. Other than that, I manage the law interns that I have help me out on various cases. In terms of volunteer work, I helped coached one of my schools team and I volunteered as a tutor for this program that prepare minority law students to pass the bar exam. I don't think that there is anything extraordinary about my profile, especially when compared to profiles that I've read for people applying to similar schools as me! Other facts about me are that I am an African-American male and sit on my law schools diversity council. Some of my concerns are my lack of a solid math background, the fact that I already have a professional degree (I really am interested in changing careers because I want to become a consultant and after I learn how businesses operate after a few years, run my own company), mediocre grades(low for the schools I am targeting) and average work experience. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Okay, now the picture becomes to clear up a bit. So, lawyers I have noticed are relatively highly prized by MBAs. It will be especially good if you connect your law experience to what you expect to get out of your MBA (say for example your aim is to learn more about business so you can become General Counsel for somesuch company). Being an African American candidate will help as well. If you have not yet already, you should check out the possibility of applying through the Consortium (being on the diversity council will help there).

As for your lack of math skills, you can easily remedy that by signing up for MAth of Business, or Calculus classes in your local community college, and informing the schools that you have done so, as you suggested.
