Addressing a low quant score- mention wedding?

Hi All,

I was planning my wedding and studying for the gmat at the same time. Clearly I was short on time for both. In my application essay addressing this score, should I mention the wedding planning? Without it, it seems like I'm making excuses, but with it, it might seem whiney. Thoughts? Thanks!

Agreed... do not add that in there. Is that to say that planning your wedding was more stressful than the consultant who was flying across the country every week while working 12hrs/day... or the investment banker who was also working on a deal... or the non-profit person who lost a huge donor and... or someone who lost a family member.... or the person abroad serving in the military... or... or... or.. or...

My goal is to make MBA applicants take onus over their process.

Agreed, leave it out. Although weddings are probably more demanding than most consulting projects

!

Now, because you don't have a viable excuse, how you address it will be incredibly important. You can still use the optional essay but it will have to be more "ok, so the quant score was low but here is why I'm still strong in quant in the real world". Not to mention, your application (specifically the resume and recommendations) will have to support these assertions.

You definitely don't have to mention your wedding. The wedding it's cool, but it's only your problem and nobody cares. The people you address to also have their own affairs and concerns, but they find time to consider your essay. And, I think, if you write about the wedding, they will immediately accept it for excuses, and they will have reasons for doubting if you really need this job. So good luck with planning.
