Profile Evaluation - Second MBA

by second_mba_2013 » Fri Nov 02, 2012 11:53 pm
Thanks in advance to anyone who evaluates my profile.

Work experience - 5+ years of post MBA experience in Big4 consulting firm as a senior consultant with experience on a range of strategy and operations projects
Indian with 29 years of age
GMAT score - 700, Quant 50, Verbal 35

One year full time work with a leading automotive manufacturer with one additional year as internship during undergraduate course

3 month consulting assignment on energy sustainability (renewable) with a scholarship from a leading trust in India

Undergrad - Top 10 Indian engineering college (Non IIT), University rank 1 for 3 consecutive years
Postgrad - Top 10 Indian MBA School (Non IIM), Top 20 in class

Extracurrics - Number of quizzing/ sports awards, leadership roles in clubs

Recommendations from a number of senior managers and partners in the consulting firm

Intention is to update learning through a second MBA (first was a mere tick mark) as well as to gain international experience.

Thinking of applying to MIT (MSMS), other top one year MBA courses (Kellogs/ Cornell, Emory) as well as Harvard/ Stanford.
Do let me know of what you think are my chances.

GMAT is decent work experience is good prima facie. Why do you wish to apply to MIT - MSMS, why not MIT sloan MBA. And you have a consulting experience, so why don't you apply to schools such as Ross, ISB, Darden, UCLA Anderson?

Hi,

I am Vikram from Mumbai,India .
I was wondering what you thought of my chances of getting into my target schools: Harvard, Wharton, Stanford or Booth based on my stats:

I am an Indian male 26 years old
GMAT- 730
MBA-Finance(2011) : 3.0/4.0
B.E (IT)(2009) : 62%
XII (2005) : 71%
X (2003) : 78%
CFA Level III Candidate.

Extra curriculum activities : Mountaineering, Field Sports, Have a started a NGO , which is into Education and Family upliftment. NGO has impacted life of more than 100 people in India since its inception in 2009.
Letter of Recommendations from 3 CFOs of Large Corporates are expected.

Work Experience: 3 Yrs in Leading Financial Services Company with a focus on Debt/Mezzanine funding.Part of Credit Appraisal team.

Do you think i am strong candidate for these schools, given the fact this is my second MBA attempt within 2-3 years of passing out from the first one. Or can u suggest a few B-Schools where I can have better chance of making it.

Thanks
Vikram

Hi Vikram,

Thanks for sharing your profile, I'll surely help out. A few questions:

1) When and from where did you do your first MBA
2) Please talk a bit more about your professional profile, need to see if there are any strong leadership, team-building or challenging experiences in there.
3) Please give a little more info on your post MBA goals because goal clarity is of utmost importance to B-schools, more so when you are going for a 2nd MBA. B-schools would want to know what kind of career progression you have in mind. You should not come out a dis-oriented candidate.

Thanks a lot for evaluating my Profile:

the additional info desired are as follows:
1)I did my PGDM(MBA) from 2009-2011 from IMI, New Delhi which is among the top 20 B-schools in India.

2) Professional Career : Have lead transactions worth more than Rs 60 Bn an successfully closed for Rs. 6000 Mn. Was involved in the first underwriting assignment in the organisation and lot of new initiatives taken to diversify the investment portfolio. Negotiations with PE, CFO no term sheet and have successfully closed investments worth more than Rs. 6000 Mn.

3) Post Second MBA goal is to set up a Private Equity Fund focused on the burgeoning India firms. For that I require a global exposure in terms of the experience and secondly an international network to raise capital/resources. Hence in order to cherish my long term goals, it is extremely important for me to have a global exposure and to develop a network to accomplish my goal of setting up a Private Equity Fund. Clearing the CFA Level-I&II and candidature in Level-III is a step towards my goal

Kindly evaluate my profile and suggest good B-Schools who wud accept an PGDM (MBA) pass out.

Thanks and Regards
Vikram

Hi Vikram,

You have a remarkable profile & a decent GMAT Score. With more than 5 yrs. of work experience, you are in perfect stage of your career, which mostly b-schools look for. You have quite good chances of being accepted to the colleges you have mentioned. But, I also feel to add few more to your list like: Columbia, Kellogg, Haas, Tuck, Duke, Darden, Tepper & Kenan-Flagler. The average GMAT Score for these B-Schools fall in between 630-760 range, so you have strong possibility of being accepted.

I suggest you to focus on your application evaluation essays. This is where you can demonstrate your leadership qualities, achievements, professional vision and other abilities. You can also try your chances of b-school by clicking to the link https://www.general-ed.com/chances-of-bschool

Feel free to post any other query or concern that you might have. You can also PM me your number for brief discussion over your profile & selection of b-schools.

Cheers!!
Yash

Darden and Ross are some very strong schools known for Strategy / General-management and operations which ties well with your professional background. See below rankings.

https://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandr ... t-rankings

In addition to these rankings also look at the employment reports and look for two things:
1) Industry-wise and function-wise split on placements
2) Recruiter lists

UCLA has off-lately been known for consulting, GM and operations. At UCLA companies such as Amazon, Abbott hire for operations and GM roles, where as top-notch consulting firms would go in for senior associate roles for international locations depending your previous work experience. Please go through this employment report in detail:
