Casino industry background

by ctimpano » Tue Jun 30, 2009 2:11 am
Hi -

I currently work as a resort developer for a major casino gaming company. I work within gaming because it affords me an opportunity to build resorts with elements that would never pencil in a traditional hotel like Vegas-style show, celebrity restaurants, theme parks etc., not because I like gambling.

Do you think that my professional background could lead to discrimination? I know that many people are strongly against casino gaming. Is this something worthwhile for me to address in the "extra" essay, or will that just give the impression that I think that I am working in morally gray area?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm no admissions expert, but I do believe they're looking for diversity in their classes. I'm pretty sure that you won't see many applicants with your background!
It strikes me as odd that there could be resentment towards the casino industry... But I'm not American, I'm European; we really don't have that "political correctness" stuff...

ctimpano,

I agree with Dana. Since not many MBA applicants have experience in casino resort development, you will clearly stand out from other applicants. Just be sure to show that you have done your job well - demonstrate leadership, show impact, etc.

To mitigate any negative associations with gambling, you should just highlight the entertainment angle of your work. (For example, building a Broadway type theater for performances.)

Feel free to contact me for a free initial phone consultation if you would like to brainstorm more about how to position your candidacy.

These things are foolproof aren't they? Who ever heard of a casino losing money? (Well, hold on, there was the Flamingo, the first big joint in Vegas-it lost money from day one thanks to Bugsy Siegel and we know what happened to him.) It's a license to print money, owning a casino. Odds stacked in favor of the house, an endless supply of suckers-why do you think casino owners are willing to endure the kind of grief they get in a place like Columbus?

Hah! that made me laugh..
Well, from the B-school perspective "Business is business". You work for a casino, you work for Big Tobacco, you work for an NGO.. they don't discriminate as long as you are good at what you do.
