Suggestion on the schools to apply

by murthy.c.shilpa » Thu Jul 21, 2011 9:41 am
Hi All,

I wrote my GMAT in April and scored 750(v-41,q-50). My GPA is 3.4. I just completed 2 years in Deloitte and am planning to apply for the 2012 batch, so will have around 3 years work ex till then.
I am part of Deloitte consulting and my job profile is purely technical.

I got promoted in 2 years and this would normally take 3 years to achieve.I have also received many applause awards from clients. I have worked for many firm initiatives and am part of the core team of a community service thread. I was also part of the planning committee of technical fests.

With this profile is it too ambitious to apply for the top 10 MBA colleges and also what colleges should I be applying for? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. :)

Hello

Looking at the 2012 class profile at Columbia the students scored in the range of 680-760 in their GMAT. Similarly at Wharton's MBA class of 2012 the students scored in the range of 650-770 in their GMAT and the median GMAT score being 720. Hence a GMAT score of 700 plus is advisable if you are aiming for top institutes abroad. So congrats on your GMAT score.

However it is not just the academics but beyond the academics that will help you in determining your candidature. Generally most of the applicants have a good 4-5 years of full time work experience apart from part time work exp or internships. Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So if you can show that in 3 years you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for you can put in a strong set of essays.

Make sure you follow the 'show rather than tell' principle so that the admissions committee could really understand your strengths and differentiating factors."

At a high level your scores are competitive for all Top MBA schools. Determine which schools based upon your career goals, preferred academic environment, pedagogy, regional preference, etc. You might try to attend an MBA Tour event and visit each school.

Murthy,

In order to get a fuller sense of your profile, I would need to know your undergraduate institution and rank/gpa. Your GMAT is clearly solid.

I think the key to your applications will be making sure that you paint yourself as much as possible as a leader who has exhibited general management skills. Though you are coming from a more technical vantage point, you will still be judged through a prism of leadership and leadership potential. So in addition to your technical/analytical abilities, have you trained other employees, have you formally presented to senior level employees and won support, have you worked well on teams...

Even from your post, I can tell you are a technical person, using words like "thread". I'm not trying to make too much of one word choice, but merely use it as a metaphor for the positioning job you have ahead of yourself. If you just come across as a technologist, well you might be better suited for certain schools, but if you want to get into a top school, you must convince your readers and interviewers that your interests, experiences and ambitions are broad.

I hope that helps.

If you want a deeper look, email your resume to [email protected]

Good Luck!

Hi Shilpa,

Your GMAT score is great and GPA is also above average. So as far as academics is concerned, you need not worry too much. What's your undergrad institution?

As far as number of years of experience is concerned, ~2.5 years is much less than the average of most schools. That being said, the quantity can be compensated by the quality.
I got promoted in 2 years and this would normally take 3 years to achieve.I have also received many applause awards from clients. I have worked for many firm initiatives and am part of the core team of a community service thread. I was also part of the planning committee of technical fests.
The fact that you were promoted earlier than usual in Deloitte says something about your performance. In your application you will need to detail out what you did to achieve an early promotion. This will be validated in your recommendation too. Firm initiatives indicate you are not just limited to the work allocated to you and you think beyond. But what are those initiatives? Will be good to know... You can mail us to discuss in detail beyond a public thread.
With this profile is it too ambitious to apply for the top 10 MBA colleges and also what colleges should I be applying for? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. :)
You do have a shot at some of the top 10 schools, but the selection will depend on factors beyond the ones stated here. You need to tell what your career goals are and where you fit in terms of culture preferences, etc.
