According to a study by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, companies in the US are providing job training and general education for nearly eight million people, about equivalent to the enrollment of the nation's four-year colleges and universities.

A.
B. the equivalent of those enrolled in
C. equal to those who are enrolled in
D. as many as the enrollment of
E. as many as are enrolled in

Please explain how you come up with your choice. What are the differences among those usages (the equivalent of/ equal to/ as many as)?

imo B

the equivalency is sought for "nearly eight million people". So its a plural object with another plural object.

D. "the enrollment of" would be singular
C "who are enrolled in" is redundant. "equal to those enrolled in" would do fine.

Between B and E I am not sure about my reasons to choose B.

Good question!

OA is E.

I'm not totally clear about how to get to that answer. However, you guys can follow the link posted by shovan85 for more opinions.
