hi,

Need help with understanding the following qs -

A light bulb company produces 2,000 light bulbs per week. The manager wants to ensure that standards of quality remain constant from week to week. The manager, therefore, suggests that the company reject 500 of the 2,000 light bulbs it produces each week.

Of the following, the best criticism of the manager's plan is that the plan assumes that


light bulb manufacturers cannot market every light bulb that they produce


the overall quality of the light bulbs would not be improved if the total number of light bulbs produced were reduced


each light bulb that is reviewed is worthy of being reviewed


it is difficult to judge the quality of a light bulb


the 1,500 light bulbs that are accepted will be of the same quality from week to week

This is a PLANNING argument.
The plan is to reject 500 of 2000 bulbs each week and to RETAIN 1500 BULBS EACH WEEK.
The conclusion is that that standards of quality will REMAIN CONSTANT.
For the plan to work, it must be true that the 1500 BULBS RETAINED EACH WEEK are all of the SAME QUALITY.
If the quality of these bulbs CHANGES from one week to the next, then the argument CANNOT conclude that standards of quality will REMAIN CONSTANT.

Answer choice E: The argument assumes that the 1,500 light bulbs that are accepted will be of the same quality from week to week.

The correct answer is E.

Why not D?

Meaning in E and D is same. I think D is more specific.

Could you please explain.

The answer choices represent what THE MANAGER ASSUMES: in other words, WHAT MUST BE TRUE for the manager's plan to work.
Answer choice D: It is difficult to judge the quality of a light bulb.
Quite the opposite:
For the manager's plan to work, it must NOT be difficult to judge which of the 2000 bulbs should be rejected.
Thus, D is not what the manager is assuming.
