I'm a former heavy user of this page which I leveraged about 3.5 years ago to take my GMAT score from a 670 to a 730. I found the information on this page to be of enormous help. So thank you all.

Now I am back in hopes of helping my fiancé improve her scores. This will be my first attempt at teaching someone so we'll see how it goes. I'm sure I will be asking many questions.

We come from vastly different backgrounds (me=engineering, her=marketing) and different test taking abilities (me=pretty good, her=not so good). I am trying to make up a plan for her similar to the study plan that I had.

Current Score
~540 (I am guessing based off her GRE; having her take a diagnostic test in about 2 days) and I'm not sure of the breakdown although she does better with verbal than quant

Goal Score
660 (average at the university she is applying)

Total Study Hours
120 (either 54 days or 103 days depending on round of application)

Schedule
Test
Study 10 Hours
Test
Repeat

Strategy
My general strategy was to take a full exam, evaluate the results then spend the next 10 hours studying proportionally to what percentage of misses were from each category. Do problems, analyze results and study misses. Then test again. When testing I went in a room similar to the testing room (we have rooms sort of like this at work) and took the full test including writing with exactly the same breaks, scratch pad and everything. I was going to do the same for her.

Resources
OG11
OG12
OGVerbal
OGQuant
MGMAT Sentence Correction
Powerscore CR (they didn't have this when I took it but it sounds pretty good)
MGMAT RC
Kaplan Math

She's not super advanced in math; should I still give her the MGMAT books for the specifics or would that just confuse her?

Also has anything changed in the last 3.5 years? Any radically new study guides or advice I should be aware of?

I'll be keeping a log here of her progress. Thanks in advance for the help!

I think you're playing it wrong. If I were to design a study method for someone attempting to score above 650, I would recommend the following.

Books:

MGMAT Number properties
MGMAT Fractions Decimals and Percents
MGMAT Equations Inequalities and Vics
MGMAT Word Translations
MGMAT Geometry
MGMAT Sentence Correction
PowerScore Critical Reasoning Bible

I think with her major weakness being in math, really attempt to provide her with a math immersion so to speak. If she can get to the point where she can get a 40 in quant, she will be able to get a 45 in verbal. Odds are she has a good vocabulary, so the verbal will come.

That is why I asked. I loved the MGMAT books and I lived on the MGMAT for the verbal section myself. However I just used the kaplan 800 and a bunch of online stuff to study for the math because I didn't really need help in that area. So I have never seen the big 5 math books from Manhattan. I figured that indepth a strategy might be confusing. However after reading your post and grabbing one (the number properties) I agree they will be the way to go. Thanks for the tip!

And I had the powerscore one in there. Is that loads better than the MGMAT CR book? I have the manhattan one and it was great for me (I sucked at CR.) If the powerscore is better I'd be more than happy to grab a copy.

Well I can say for her that she is dedicated. I told her about the possibilities and how hard it was going to be and she jumped right up and volunteered to take a diagnostic at 11:00 last night. So at about 2:30am I got the results...

Quant: 24
Verbal: 31

Overall 470

I can see we have some work to do. On the up side she had never taken a computer test before and didn't know anything about the structure of the GMAT or how a CAT works. Could anyone recommend a book or resource that is a good explanation and strategy versus CAT tests such as "CAT tests are adaptive...missing a question later in the exam will have a lesser effect on your score than one earlier...spend more time on an earlier question"?

My brief analysis this morning yielded hope. Her verbal was good in that she only missed 2 CR questions which I find the hardest to learn (not accounting for difficulty level.) Her most missed by far was SC which I think is more algorithmic and easier to practice. So I see possibilities there.

Her math was a little disappointing. I think that she has just forgotten basic stuff like properties of roots, geometric figures, etc. Should I still get her the MGMAT books or start with a basic Kaplan Math?

Any other suggestions you guys have for training? I'm automating all the excel sheets and picking up a couple of books today and we'll start working tonight. We're picking out the GMAT test date tomorrow.

I'll keep posting...

This is what I would do. I would have her study in phases. This wil probably take about 6 months

First 2 months:

Manhattan GMAT math foundations
Kaplan Premier
Manhattan GMAT Sentence Correction

Next 2 months:

MGMAT Number properties
MGMAT Fractions Decimals and percents
MGMAT Equations Inequalities and Vics
MGMAT Word Translations
MGMAT Geometry
Powerscore Critical Reasoning Bible

Final 2 months:

Official Guide 12
Official Guide Verbal
Official Guide Math

The only thing I would recommend is to not focus on the advanced chapters of the MGMAT math guides. Those may be too difficult for her.

Hey Osiris,

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately we don't have that level of time; we have to do it in a straight shot. I estimate that she probably needs about 200 hours of study but is likely only going to get about 150. We've got 3.5 hours a day on the weekday and 6 hours a day on the weekends. Its a rough schedule but its got to be done and she knows it. Plus I think she operates better when shes completely immersed.

I got her the math foundations guide as I figure that will get her started with the basics and then we'll transition to the 5 MGMAT math guides after we're done with that.

You would recommend waiting until the end to use the OG's for problem sets? What would you recommend in the intermediate times? The MGMAT books do have some problems but probably not enough. I was thinking of having her go through, for example, the MGMAT math foundations, complete all the problems there and then move on to OG12 problems in the same phase rather than afterwards.

If you're pressed for times, just go through the MGMAT math foundations, MGMAT Sentence Correction, and the Official Guides. Have her do the two manhattan books, and then proceed to the Official Guides and just have her do as many problems as possible until the exam.

Thanks for all the help Osirus. I'm going to start a log in a new thread.
