A contractor combined x tons of a gravel mixture that contained 10% gravel G, by weight, with y tons of a mixture that contained 2% gravel G, by weight, to produce z tons of a mixture that was 5% gravel G, by weight. What is the value of x?

1. y = 10
2. z = 16

What is the value of x?

1. y = 10
2. z = 16
weight of gravel in 1st mix = x/10
weight of gravel in 2nd mix = y/50
z=x+y
also x/10 +y/50 = z/20 = (x+y)/20 -->
10x+2y = 5(x+y) --> 5x=3y

St.1 ) y= 10 --> x = 3/5 x10 = 6 tons============suff.
St.2) z= 16 --> x+y =16 --> x+5/3 x = 16 --> x= 48/8 = 6 tons============suff.
