Hi,

I'm planning to apply to a US MBA Program that is strong in General Management & Consulting for fall 2011 admissions. I'm from management consulting background, but I have limited industry/domain experience as I work purely in IT Management(Non Technical) domain. Post MBA I want to take up a career in Stratey Consulting or General Management.

Targeting - Top: Tuck; Mid: Darden, Anderson, Ross; Low: Tepper, Fuqua, McCombs, Marshall, Kenan-Flagler

Can you please evaluate my profile and suggest what are the 2-3 areas that I need to work on in the comming 6months for submitting a stronger application?

Profile:
- 26, Male, India, Engineer(Computer Sciences), GMAT(AWA) 630(5.0) & 670(5.0)
- School 86%(10th) & 94%(12th). College 72% overall from top 20 univerisity in India.
- 5 yrs(currently) with IBM(India based) as Consultant reporting to client and working with client teams out of Australia, Malaysia, Europe and America. 2 promotions in first 4 years & adjudged as Top Tallent(top ~5% of staff) in & since 2008. Several awards & recognitions in Job. Joined as techie(never written a line of code!) and recruited into Strategy Consulting practice in 2009 based on my demonstrated performance in consulting roles.
- Extra curriculars:
School: participation in essay & elocution competetions, drama(almost acted in every single drama every year), badminton(competed for state championship)
College: Student committee(event management - started as volunteer and finished as Joint Co-Ordinator of Hospitality Committee in 4th year)
Current: learning guitar, spanish(currently in intermediate level), have connected with CEO of an NGO to find some pro-bono consulting/volunteering opportunities for me.

PS: I would put in extra hours in the NGO work than take GMAT again. But pls tell me if it is ABOSLUTELY necessary to re-take.

Regards,
Pate_Jacky

Hello,

I totally understand your antipathy to retaking the GMAT, but I do think it would help significantly, and it would be important in making you competitive for the schools you list. Particularly given your Indian demographic and IT background, the 670 will be a weakness -- not necessarily a make-or-break weakness, as you clearly have some strengths (looks like strong career advancement, good extracurriculars).

Aside from the GMAT, there are some other things you can do to improve your candidacy: (1) take on leadership roles in your NGO efforts; (2) look for (or create) opportunities at work to further exercise leadership - perhaps in new areas or situations that are relevant to your goals. Also, research your goals and prospective companies in-depth to make a really compelling case, possibly even trying to develop some contacts. Discussing these efforts to further understand and prepare for your post-MBA consulting role will help you stand out and strengthen the credibility of your goals (i.e., they're not just something you're going to do - they're something you're already taking steps toward).

Best regards,

Hello Cindy,

I'm grateful for your honest feedback. I'm very glad to know that my lrelatively ow GMAT is not going to be 'make or break' thing. Well, If I spend another 3 months, I can improve my score by another 30 points. If I spend another 3 months in the NGO I will learn more than calculus and algebra. Who knows I might change a few lives in some ways.

I'll take your advise sincerely and target for leadership roles at work and outside. I'm already in touch with alumnus in my industry/function of my target schools. I'll apply in early round and if GMAT is the only show stopper, I'll promise adcom that I'll re-take.

With that said, do schools review each application(international-Indian) or simply set aside those with lower GMAT scores?

Thanks very much!

Hello,

They claim to review each application, and I'd take them at their word. Even if they do set aside some with really low GMATs, your score wouldn't put you in that category.
