A did its return in 1910-1911
B had its 1910-1911 return
C in its return of 1910-1911
D its return of 1910-1911 did
E its return in 1910-1911
b,c and d can be easily removed. b--> unnecessary past perfect tense. Also, "1910-1911 return" or "return of 1910-1911", in c and d, is an awkward construction. You can say "return of superman" but "return of a time period" is just awkward.

a contains unnecessary "did", when without it the sentence can work.

IMO E

I would go with C as C maintains parallelism.....E changes the intended meaning by implying that return caused distruction rather than the comet

IMO C is correct.

In no other historical sighting did Halley's commet cause such a worlwide sensation as in its return in 1910-1911

Choice A: In no other historical sighting did Halley's commet causesucha worlwide sensation as did its return in 1910-1911.

This choice does not set up parallel comparison. I can re-write the sentence as follows:

Halley's comet caused such a worldwide sensation in no other historical sighting as did its return in 1910-1911.

Parallel Element structure is

caused in no other historical sighting (Element 1)
AS
did its return in 1910-1911 (Element 2)

The portions of elements in green should be at the same logical level. But the placement of 1910-1911 after in, makes the lists not parallel.

:)
