Local widget manufacturers

by soumyopriyosaha » Tue Jan 26, 2010 6:54 am
In an effort to support local widget manufacturers, the State of New Carolina made it illegal for any individual or business in New Carolina to purchase widgets from out-of-state manufacturers. Numerous factories in New Carolina produce machinery that requires widgets, and those factories were forced to raise the prices on their machinery.

The passage to the left most strongly supports which of the following inferences?
a. Widget manufacturers in the State of New Carolina charge more for widgets than do out-of-state widget manufacturers.
b. The machinery that incorporates widgets is usually sold outside of New Carolina.
c. The factories that used to buy out-of-state widgets sold the machinery that incorporated widgets to buyers in the same states from which the widgets originated.
d. Out-of-state widgets had become increasingly expensive, and the resulting trade deficit was part of the motivation for the ban on purchasing widgets from outside of New Carolina.
e. Purchasing widgets from outside of New Carolina was crucial to the state's economy.

why would factories be forced to raise the prices on their machinery just because they purchase local widgets??

This would happen in case the widgets manufactured in the state were expensive when compared to out of state widget, else the price shouldnt matter rite??

Lets look at options.

a. Widget manufacturers in the State of New Carolina charge more for widgets than do out-of-state widget manufacturers. [ articulates just what we had thought. correct!]

b. The machinery that incorporates widgets is usually sold outside of New Carolina. [ where the machinery is sold is not indicated in the passage]

c. The factories that used to buy out-of-state widgets sold the machinery that incorporated widgets to buyers in the same states from which the widgets originated. [ out of scope again!]

d. Out-of-state widgets had become increasingly expensive, and the resulting trade deficit was part of the motivation for the ban on purchasing widgets from outside of New Carolina. [ this again is out of scope. the stimulus no where indicates the reason behind the motivation for the ban.]

e. Purchasing widgets from outside of New Carolina was crucial to the state’s economy. [ was it crucial or not is not indicated in the passage. eliminated]

hope this helps!

prephrasing stimulus

banning purchase of widgets from out of state manufactures------->will cause 1) inc is sale of in state (local) manufactures and 2) inc in price of m/c produced by factories in New Carolina

for 2) cause to be true since the local widget manufacturer are the only option left with factories and if the price of these local widgets is higher then that of out of state widgets then certainly price of m/c will rise .

Hence A) is the correct Ans

The passage to the left most strongly supports which of the following inferences?

a. Widget manufacturers in the State of New Carolina charge more for widgets than do out-of-state widget manufacturers.
CORRECT : if the factories were forced to raise price of their machinery it can be inferred that buying widgets from local manufacturers was more expensive than buying from out of town widget manufacturers

b. The machinery that incorporates widgets is usually sold outside of New Carolina.
INCORRECT : Selling machinery outside New Carolina may or may not have forced ..... It can also be reversed.

c. The factories that used to buy out-of-state widgets sold the machinery that incorporated widgets to buyers in the same states from which the widgets originated.
INCORRECT : Irrelevant. It cannot be inferred from the premise that the factories bought n sold in the same states

d. Out-of-state widgets had become increasingly expensive, and the resulting trade deficit was part of the motivation for the ban on purchasing widgets from outside of New Carolina.
INCORRECT : It is clearly stated that the reason for ban of out of state widget was to SUPPORT LOCAL MANUFACTURERS

e. Purchasing widgets from outside of New Carolina was crucial to the state's economy.
INCORRECT : out of scope

P1. Purchase of Widgets from out-of-state manufacturers made illegal by new Carolina State.
P2. P1 helps local widget Manufacturers.
P3. Lot of factories in New Carolina produce machinery that requires widgets.
P4. factories in P3 were forced to raise the prices of the machinery.

Now let us look at the logical organization,
P1 causes P2.(assumption)
P1 caused P4.(in reality)

The question is an inference question and so a must be true question,
A- This is essentially the reason for P4. Must be true.
B- Not supported by the argument.
C- Not Supported by the argument.
D- Counter to what happened.
E- Not supported by the economy.

Though a far-fetch, option A is the only option that is supported by the stimulus.so A.

OA: a
a) Supported by the passage - Factories are forced increase prices
b) No mention in the passage
c) No mention in the passage
d) No mention in the passage
e) cannot be inferred since we do not know about economy's dependence on Machinery producing factories
