I got this sentences from beat the GMAT forum which has incorrect sentences (Hence there are no 5 choices ), this is one of them.
Can anyone help me identify whats wrong with the comparison and how can we correct it

https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2009/11/ ... ons-part-1

1.Small businesses in the central Lyriana business district are more likely to receive pedestrian traffic than are larger businesses in the central Lyriana business district.

It looks fine to me as we are comparing small business with larger business.
Is 'are' making all the difference. Should we use 'do'

Are below versions 2 and 3 correct

2. Small businesses in the central Lyriana business district are more likely to receive pedestrian traffic than do larger businesses in the central Lyriana business district.

or (Is are in 1. wordy or incorrect)

3. Small businesses in the central Lyriana business district are more likely to receive pedestrian traffic than larger businesses in the central Lyriana business district.

GMAT kiss: I have some questions on comparisons .
There are some sentences which are incorrect as per knewton.
Since they have not given the correct version . I am trying to get the correct version with the
help of our freinds in this community.

I feel this would be useful to others also, as most of the sentence Correction questions touch this topic and by knowing that we are comparing apples to oranges would be great relief to reduce time spent in those choices.

I hope this explains

I think there should be "the" in place of are.

1.Small businesses in the central Lyriana business district are more likely to receive pedestrian traffic than are larger businesses in the central Lyriana business district. - perfect

2. Small businesses in the central Lyriana business district are more likely to receive pedestrian traffic than do larger businesses in the central Lyriana business district. - "are" is better. When you say "do" it means that the larger business is itself doing the job. Here they are not doing the action.

Please note the usage of "do" :

Some people do not eat soup but I do. ( MGMAT SC example) - Some people and I are actually doing the action

3. Small businesses in the central Lyriana business district are more likely to receive pedestrian traffic than larger businesses in the central Lyriana business district. - wrong , incorrect comparison
