comparison - OG Verbal

Last year, land values in most parts of the pinelands rose almost so fast, and in some parts even faster than what they did outside the pinelands.

(A) so fast, and in some parts even faster than what they did
(B) so fast, and in some parts even faster than, those
(C) as fast, and in some parts even faster than, those
(D) as fast as, and in some parts even faster than, those
(E) as fast as, and in some parts even faster than what they did

OA is D

what is compared in this sentence. It is the rise in land values in place x vs rise in land values in place Y
1. Please explain how the correct answer has the right comparison
2. When will you replace a verb with did / does.. and why we cannot do it in this sentence

as X as Y is the correct construction
D or E.
Last year, land values in most parts of the pinelands rose almost as fast as, and in some parts even faster than, those outside the pinelands.

I don't like this sentence.. Please post some explanation
When we have an object for the verb - we need to add helping verb. When there is no object - then we dont need to put the helping verb.

I drive car faster than joe does. - correct. There is an object, put helping verb.
I run faster than Joe - Correct. No object, no need of helping verb. Putting an helping verb is not wrong but its not necessary. Best and concise.

A,B and C - are incorrect.

E - "what they did" is imprecise and unnecessary. Consider this,

1.I ran as fast as, or even faster than, Joe
2.I ran as fast as, or even faster than, Joe ran.
3.I ran as fast as, or even faster than, Joe did.

But we can't write: I ran as fast as, or even faster than, what Joe did.

D is correct.

Hi there,

Last year, land values in most parts of the pinelands rose almost so fast, and in some parts even faster than what they did outside the pinelands.

"¢ Last year, land values in most parts of the pinelands rose.
"¢ This price rose as fast as, and in some parts even faster than, the prices outside the pinelands.
o Entities being compared are - land values in most parts of pineland & land values outside the pinelands
o The characteristic being compared is - extent of rise

Error Analysis:

Choice A: so fast, and in some parts even faster than what they did: Incorrect for the reasons stated above.

Choice B: so fast, and in some parts even faster than, those: Incorrect. Same idiom error as in A.

Choice C: as fast, and in some parts even faster than, those: Incorrect. "...as fast..." is an incorrect idiom. "as" is missing after "fast".

Choice D: as fast as, and in some parts even faster than, those: Correct.

Choice E: as fast as, and in some parts even faster than what they did: Incorrect. Same parallelism & punctuation errors as in A.

GMATGuruNY, other experts:

Would E be fine if it read - "as fast as, and in some parts even faster than they did" i.e. sans 'what'?
