hello, hope this still helps.

A and C are wrong because these options make the reader think that the College was renegade only in the moment that it was founded.

E is wrong because it is awkward

B is wrong because it does not expresses clearly who took the decision.

With option D as well the institution is indicated to be renegade at its founding. How is that better than C?

I think D is better than C because the phrase "at its founding in 1833" in D, could be removed without changing the meaning of the sentence:

"X College was a renegade institution in deciding to accept both men and women as students"

Therefore, I think D does not make the reader think that the College was renegade only in the moment that it was founded.

Can any of the experts please explain why C is the wrong answer.

At first instance, C is the most lucrative one...

Is there some rule to differentiate betweeen the two options!!!
