Is X + Y < 1?

Statement 1: X < 8/9. No info on y, insufficient.

Statement 2: Y < 1/8. No info on x, insufficient.

Both statements together: Add both statements

X + Y < 8/9 + 1/8
X + Y < (64 + 9)/72
X + Y < 1 + 1/72 …this does not guarantee X + Y < 1, so insufficient.

Choose E.
