Without adequate amounts of sleep, people's newly acquired skills and also new factual information may not get properly encoded into their memory circuits.

A. Without adequate amounts of sleep, people's newly acquired skills and also

B. Without the adequate amount of sleep they need, people's newly acquired skills and even

C. If they do not have adequate amounts of sleep, people's newly acquired skills and even

D. If people do not get adequate amounts of sleep, newly acquired skills and even

E. If people do not get the adequate amount of sleep they need, newly acquired skills and also

[spoiler]OA D. I was able to narrow down to D & E and selected E. Till date, I was under impression that amounts of and numbers of are always wrong but this question of GMATPREP raised a red flag. Further, option E has many other errors but I didn't read the sentence after amounts of and amount of.

Be careful about making sweeping generalizations. Use a bit of logic. If I have 8 pounds of item x, that is one amount. If I have 8 pounds of item x and you have 9 pounds of item x those are two different amounts. So that's the real question: are we talking about more than one quantity? If I get 8 hours of sleep on one night and 9 hours of sleep on another night those are two different amounts.
