Hi Paritosh,

Except for ISB your list has all aspirational schools ( tough to achieve). You profile has different string elements such as GMAT, undergrad GPA, BITS brand name and international exposure.

But less than 3 yrs of exp by the time you join a B school will put you on backfoot.

If you are open to targeting top schools this year and can wait for a year if you dont get through take your chances. I have a feeling that you might crack one or two. But if you, for any reason, want to enter a B school for sure in 2012, then keep a couple of safe schools.

Focus on highlighting the operations aspect of work ex and make it sound less technical and IT oriented.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the evaluation, Apphelp team. It was indeed very helpful. I just want to request some clarifications.

I had researched a bit and had read that MIT Sloan weighs your academic record slightly above your work experience. Would it be sensible to apply with such a profile there for 2012?

Also, you state that apart from ISB, the other schools are tough to achieve. Why is that so? I believed (and even the FT rankings say so) that ISB ranks in the big league only.

Finally, on your suggestion of safe schools, can someone suggest a reasonable bunch where I can aim?

Your help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

My opinion is different from the other poster. I feel certain schools favor younger candidates and that the original posters academics are so outstanding that he should be targeting the top 7 including HBS and Stanford, with obviously a safety school like an ISB or within the U.S. UCLA Anderson or a Cornell Johnson should be considered.

BITS Pilani is excellent as are your grades and scores. Given your strategy/marketing/consulting/entrepreneurship goals, you should consider adding HBS, Stanford, Wharton, Chicago, and/or Columbia to your schools to consider targeting.

Best of luck,

Thanks for the evaluation, Michael. Can you tell me one more thing? Since I don't have a long list of extra curriculars, would it be worth taking a shot for the 2012 season? Also, as the apphelp team mentioned, how favourably are reapplicants looked at by the schools that you have mentioned? I've seen on INSEAD's website that they discourage reapplicants. Are reapplicants, then, considered last in a line? I ask this because if I wish to consider some schools for next season as well, then I should know where I shouldn't apply now.

Thanks!

Paritosh,

ISB may be higher on FT rankings than some other schools but most on the rankings consider some factor such as salaries adjusted for PPP and visiting/ resident faculty ratio which might not be the most important factors while choosing B schools.

You can consider the following as safer options:

Kelley Indiana

Emory

UNC Kenan Flager

Hi Paritosh

I am surprised to hear that INSEAD discourages re-applicants. Can you point me to the source of your information?

Thanks

Hi Paritosh,

Here are the high point in your profile that puts you in competitive range for some top 10 schools:

Academics: Excellent. 750 GMAT coupled with 9.81 from BITS Pilani, Dubai campus. Beat that.
Work-ex: Well, not too awesome. There are hints that puts your picture as a technical person who loves technology. Make sure apart from being an individual contributor, you refer to instances of leadership skills, team skills and other leadership capabilities as well. This will portray a well rounded personality balancing technical and leadership abilities.

Moreover, your goals are inline with your passion. Your passion is displayed in your other activities, your hobbies and your blog. I see that you have chosen schools accordingly too.

The only parameter not-so-strong is the number of years of work-ex, but as Michael has correctly put, many schools prefer younger applicants. Instead of getting carried away by this fact, you have to be cautious that despite your age, you have to prove in your application that you have displayed leadership qualities across your experience, personal and professional. This does not necessarily mean being in a leadership position, but showing qualities of leader in your day to day job.

Having said that, schools in reach are INSEAD (focus on international cultural sensitivity and diversity), ISB, Berkeley, Anderson. MIT and Kellogg are competitive. You should also try Booth, Stanford in reach.

Hi, Nakul

Here's a link to the page on INSEAD's website that mentions this: https://mba.insead.edu/admissions/admission_policies.cfm

Which schools are you targeting?

Other U.S. schools do not discourage reapplicants. BusinessWeek used to publish acceptance rates for reapplicants. You can compare this to the acceptance rate across the board to see how these reappliants have fared.

But, at a high level, I would suggest applying to competitive schools now (you can forgo INSEAD if you wish). With each passing year the bar will be set higher for your professional experience and community service so you still might be relatively weak on community service even if you wait a year and build on this area. With your undergraduate institution, grades, and GMAT score I would recommend giving it a go now.

My two cents,
