It helps to make an unbiased decision.

IMO D

In E, the "...flies that taste. ..." sounds odd to me.

In option E that is used in a rescrictive sense .

But OA is E, does using "that" make sense in this case?

I think a selection point for this q is laid in the last part of the paragraph..distinguish their own species from others...should be okay. "those" in D is not necessary.

Yes it does.
"that" restricts the flies that taste ... to distinguish ...
