Town A to Town B

by neerajkumar1_1 » Fri May 28, 2010 10:25 pm
How far is it from town A to town B? Town C is 15 miles west of town A.
(1) It is 10 miles from town B to town C.
(2) There is a river between town A and town B
OA:E
Though i got this problem right, my answer did not match with the explanation. Personally i could not understand what "it" is referring to. Even if i take it as the river, i still can not decipher the problem diagrammatically. I would request you to please explain the problem step wise.
Thanks...

given:
Town C is 15 miles west of town A.

------c----------------a

st 1: distance between b and c is 10 miles, does not let tell you east or west

options are:

b----c-----------------a

or

-----c-----b-----------a

insufficient

st2: river between a and b, let I represent the river

b----c-------I----------a

or

b--I--c-----------------a

or

-----c-----b------I-----a

insufficient

together also insufficient since no information as to whether b is east or west of c and as no information where the river is in relation to c

IMO it refer the distance bw b and C

Town C is 15 miles west of town A.So

C ---------------------------------A
15 miles

Town A is 10 miles from town B to town C.it can be like the below 2 scenarios

C ------------------------ B--------------------------------- A
10 miles
-------------------------------------------------------------------
15 miles

B-----------------------------C------------------------------A
------------- 10 miles -------------------------- 15 miles

Since we dont know the position of B,statement A is not sufficient.

Statement 2 tell nothing abt the distance.not sufficient.

Combining also not sufficient.

Hence E. hope it clarify.

What is the source?
