Got poor score-550

by ankurmit » Mon Aug 16, 2010 10:01 pm
Yesterday,I appeared for GMAT test and got a poor score of 550.

Quants: 45
Verbal : 19 ( even one can get higher score than that by random selection)

Even while attempting I never felt that I will get such a poor score.

It was shocked :(

I had never imagined such a poor score.

I attempted 6 tests of MGMAT and never got less than 620 ( MGMAT is more tough than actual GMAT)

On my last test MGMAT MOCK I got 670.

I am feeling morally down :( and not able to decide weather I shall retake GMAT. I dont know what went wrong there.

Ankur,

It is very important that you do a very good assessment of where you went wrong on the Verbal part. I cannot comment on the corelation of MGMAT scores to actual GMAT scores as there are various factors affecting it (a) your not taking AWA section (b) Stress of the exam day etc.

I would suggest you review your performance and attempt the GMAT only if you feel you can show improvement. I would suggest you talk to a GMAT expert, who can help you analyze your mistakes better.

Given your profile you don't have an option but to retake GMAT if you want to have any chances of applying to a top 20-30 school.

Thanks for your valueable suggestions.

crackverbal and indiantiger..I know verbal betrayed me.specially RC in which lost some time and than made random guess on some of the last quistions.

Can you give me any idea how to improve RC.

Hi Ankurmit,

I am very sorry to hear of the disappointment. You did well on your mock exams, which makes me hopeful. Were you sure to take them as though it were the real exam? For instance, did you time it? If so, I believe you should be able to improve your actual scores.

I think you should take some more practice exams and figure out what areas you're struggling in. You can find our practice test here https://theprincetonreview.com/free-onli ... tests.aspx and others on BTG's homepage (right hand side). For the verbal, split your mistakes up into three areas: sentence correction, reading comprehension, and critical reasoning. Then study from there. The Princeton Review has a verbal workout for a mere nineteen bucks, and as a member of BTG you get a 10% discount and free shipping with this code: BEATGMAT. Here is a link to the book https://www.randomhouse.com/princetonrev ... 0375764622.

I am also wondering if a class would help you. If you take a class with The Princeton Review, whether online or classroom, the teacher can tailor your assignments to focus on your needs. He/she can also take you aside for extra help, and after the class the class is completed you can take a refresher course if you still don't feel prepared. A course not only provides you a personalized study plan, but motivation to actually study. If you want to take a look at what we offer, you can do so here https://www.princetonreview.com/business ... ation.aspx.

If you have any further questions, you can always shoot me an email at [email protected]. I hope to hear that things start looking up for you. Good luck!

Best,
Anthony
