How to start studying for math?

Hey Guy's,


I am having a very difficult time doing the math. I enrolled in the gmatprep.com's program and have gone through the video. I am doing the corresponding questions. At first I thought, I would ask the ones I had trouble on. But it seems out of the recommended questions, I have had at least 80 - 90% of them wrong. I also do not understand the solutions for some of them.

I just started studying for the GMAT and these results feel very discouraging. However, I will not let these results hold me back. I just have to change my approach and study more.

Upon reflection, I feel as though I have lost grasp on the concepts and really need to hit the basics. Have any you guys been in this boat or understand where I am coming from? Majority of the members seem to have a firm grasp on the materials. Where can I go? Are there any free resources I can tap into? I have already looked into coursera and khanacademy but have had no luck.

Any other guidance will be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with math. I sounds like you may need to work on some core concepts.

After taking the OG's quant practice test, I quickly realized that I need to go over all of the basics. I picked up Manhattan GMAT's Math Foundations book and, so far, it's been a great refresher of all that high school math I've not seen in many a year. I recommend it. Amazon has the book for fairly cheap.

Hey, i started off with gmat sometime back too and i have had the same problem as you. I started off with Manhattan quant guides and then in the middle i left it and started following the 60 day plan on btg. I now think that it would be à good idea to first go through the math refresher book of mgmat and then all the quant guides.
Let me know too What you plan on doing?

I would suggest you to get MGMAT guide and a grockit account for practice.
Know what are the individual concepts tested on the GMAT and master them individually.

Also give more importance to Data sufficiency, Number properties and inequalities. Check Ron's videos for strategy.

Hi Hamburglar,
I agree with the previous replies. I bought the Veritas Prep book set (used) and started with the Math Essentials guide, which has been a great help because I couldn't even get through a practice test. I'm okay at math, but it's been 10+ years since I've seen anything to do with algebra, geometry or scientific notation. I wasn't a big fan on those topics in school either. Review the foundational concepts first, and you should be able to master the more difficult questions later.

Go through MGMAT strategy guides they are the best if you want to master and get hold over the basics.The materials are pretty good.

Math is an important factor for GMAT preparation. At first you have to solve the problems from some important reference books thoroughly. Then you have to revise these from time to time.
