Manhattan GMAT Rate problem...

by pkw209 » Sun Mar 14, 2010 12:31 pm
If Jim earns x dollars per hour, it will take him 4 hours to earn exactly enough money to purchase a particular jacket. If Tom earns y dollars per hour, it will take him exactly 5 hours to earn enough money to purchase the same jacket. How much does the jacket cost?

(1) Tom makes 20% less per hour than Jim does.

(2) x + y = $43.75

Explanation please. Thanks!

IMO B.

We set up a equation based on the given facts :

4X=5Y

--->Y=0.8X

From st 1, we can get Y=0.8X.

Insufficient as we are supposed to find the individual values of X or Y to find the total value of the jacket.

st 2:

x + y = $43.75

X+0.8X=43.75
--> we can find X and the total value of the Jacket also.
