600 on Manhattan GMAT

by swarnav999 » Wed Mar 12, 2014 11:28 pm
Hi,
I took the MGMAT Free CAT yesterday and I got a shocking score of 600. Q42 V32. I agree with the verbal stats but my quant is too low! I have quite a few taken practice tests before and averaged around 48 in Quant. I would like to ask if the MGMAT gauges quant rightly compared to the actual GMAT. Also in verbal, RC is my weak point. Tips will be highly appreciated. I dont follow any specific in RC. I just do it as I did in shool. :P Read the passage, answer the questions. But it isnr working. Aim is 700+.

Thankyou in advance!

Hi Swarnav,

When evaluating a CAT result, it's important to note the details. Did you take the ENTIRE CAT or did you skip sections? What time of day did you take the CAT? Did you do anything that was unrealistic (such as skip sections, pause the CAT, etc.)? The little details matter. The MGMAT CATs are reasonably accurate, so they serve as an effective measure of your ability. You EARNED a 600 on that CAT.

Once you get a chance to fully review the CAT, you should ask yourself WHY you got certain questions wrong. Was it because a question was too hard or was it because of a silly mistake? THOSE details matter too.

The 700+ is the 90th percentile - it means that 90% of Test Takers either can't or won't do what it takes to hit that score. You have to consider how you're approaching the GMAT and what you're willing to do to achieve your goal.

Here's one tip: when tackling Reading Comprehension questions, it's crucial that you engage 100% in the passage. So, rather than approach a new passage with dread ("I don't enjoy reading it at all"), try to feign interest ("Excellent! This passage is about stock market regulations in Mexico!"). The better your engagement, the better the results.
