When Americans filed their tax returns this year, the United States Treasury Department collected $315.1 billion in tax revenue, a 13.4% increase over last year. Yet the number of tax returns filed by employees did not increase significantly over the past year.

Each of the following, if true, could explain the simultaneous increase in tax revenue collection and the unchanged number of employee tax returns filed EXCEPT:

During this year, the number of women who re-entered the workforce as employees, after taking time off to raise children, was greater than the number of people who retired from the workforce.

Many retired workers owed more in taxes this year due to an increase in dividends and capital gains on their stock investments.

Last year, tax revenues were unusually low because the stock market experienced a marked decline, and many taxpayers reduced their taxable income with capital losses.

Compared with previous years, a greater percentage of the total tax revenue this year was collected from small businesses and corporations.

The employees who filed tax returns were paid higher wages this year than they were in the past, and thus owed more to the government in taxes per person.

During this year, the number of women who re-entered the workforce as employees, after taking time off to raise children, was greater than the number of people who retired from the workforce.

This option does not say how much tax the women would be paying and how much tax the retired people had paid. We cannot deduce whether the overall tax will increase or decrease or remain the same due to this change. Every other answer provides an explanation for an increase in tax collection.

This is a Paradox except question. Here we need choose the ans which least contribute to clear the paradox.

A) This choice doesn't tell anything about tax revenue or tax return filed by employees. It simply says about re-entered
woman employees. So it does't effect the argument. Hence CORRECT.

B) It tells, treasury collected more tax due to retired workers owed more tax. But as they are retired they wont file tax
return.

C) It tells last year tax revenue was unusually low due to recession. This year market is normal hence tax revenue is more.

D) This state that greater percentage of revenue collected from business. hence, tax revenue is more and tax return filed by employees is not increased much.

E) This clearly sate that employees paid higher wages hence tax per person was more. As a result more tax revenue

As GMAT Hacker well said, it is Paradox question. In this, look for answer choices that explain the increase of the tax revenue and no change in the number of employee tax return
1. Number of women > Number of retirees -> Change the number of employee file tax
2. No change in employee but increase in tax revenue because of taxes on capital gain
3. No change in employee but less tax collection last year
4. No change in employee but more tax collection through small businesses/corps
5. No change in employee but more tax collection because of higher wages
