Calculating Total Score

by 4seasoncentre » Thu Apr 09, 2009 12:23 pm
This might sound like a dumb question, but how is the Total Score calculated?

I guess it weighs the Quantitative and Verbal scaled scores, and perhaps penalizes if they are far apart?

I'd also like to know how the quantitative and verbal sections are scored, but I doubt anyone really knows the details of the algorithm.

You are 100% correct that no one (outside ETS, anyway!) really knows the algorithm!

Basically, your score is a combination of your math and verbal raw scores, which range from 7 to 51. How those are calculated is anyone's guess, but they are based on the number of questions you get correct AND the difficulty of those questions (harder questions are worth more points).

Be sure to check the percentiles on the raw scores, since (for example) a 49 in verbal is well over 99th percentile, but is a mere 90th percentile in quant.

If you want to know what combination of raw scores yields what total (200-800) score, do a search of the site to see if someone got that score previously.

Hope this helps!

As Jim said, the calculation of the scaled scores is a secret. However, once you have the scaled scores, you can either search the web for scores or use this website: https://www.800score.com/score2.php which does the calculation of the overall score based on the scaled scores for you.

Regards.

Thanks for the info.

There seem to be some discrepancies between what the calculator generates and some of the scores people have posted. I'm soo confused! oh well... its just frustrating because I like to know how everything around me works
