Business Analyst: National Motors began selling the Luxora-its new model of sedan-in June. Last week, National released sales figures for the summer months of June, July, and August that showed that by the end of August only 80,000 Luxoras had been sold. Therefore, National will probably not meet its target of selling 500,000 Luxoras in the model's first twelve months.
Which of the following would be most useful to establish in order to evaluate the analyst's prediction?

1.A. Whether new-car sales are typically lower in the summer months than at any other time of the year
2.B. Whether National Motors currently produces more cars than any other automaker
3.C. Whether the Luxora is significantly more expensive than other models produced by National Motors
4.D. Whether National Motors has introduced a new model in June in any previous year
5.E. Whether National Motors will suffer serious financial losses if it fails to meet its sales goal for the Luxora

why not D? I think A is not the choice to evaluate, if A is the choice, the conclusion of the argument should be "National will probably meet its target of selling 500,000 Luxoras in the model's first twelve months".

D is great choice because if the there is a new car before this car open to market, that new car can totally steal this car thunder and gain profits.

Pls explain why each choice is wrong, why is A is right? Thank you.

It should be A.

1.A. Whether new-car sales are typically lower in the summer months than at any other time of the year : Correct Answer. If this is true, the sales in the later months would piuck up ans there is a possibility for the sales to go up.
4.D. Whether National Motors has introduced a new model in June in any previous year: Perhaps, you did not taken into the account "ANY". This means that they say if there is a new product launch in June last year, it might replicate the same way....But it does not mention +ve/negaritve

Hope this helps.

Let me take a shot here. I got the answer as A.

Conclusion: The target of 500K will not be met in first 12 months i.e Jun-next Jun.

B: knowing the answer to this does not help us in any way. We dont care how many cars National produces.
C: again same as B. We dont care whether the car is more expensive or not. Each car is launched for a certain segment and the target would be set keeping in mind these things.
D: although this looks like influencing the conclusion - it does not. Lets say National did launch a new model of car last year or any previous year in Jun, what does that have to do with Luxoras, we cant compare the cars launched. If this choice would have been more like "Whether National met the target for a model of car launched in Jun last year" - then this would have been an interesting choice. In that case, the answer of this question could have some bearing on the conclusion. But in its current form i.e just talking about whether a new model is launched in previous year without talking about its *target met status* - this choice is useless to us.
E: we dont care whether company suffers losses or not, all we want to know is whether or not it will meet the target of 500K cars sold of model Luxore.

This leaves us with A: now lets look at this, if we answer YES (yes, new car sales are typically lower in summer months and later on it will pick up), then this helps to make the Conclusion *weak* as we know that more cars will sell in other months. If we answer NO (no, new car sales are *not* typically lower in summer months), then this helps to make the Conclusion *stronger* i.e. it is very likely that target will not be met.

hope this helps! I have just started focusing on Evaluate type of questions.

The argument talks about the sales figures of particular model, so it is necessary to draw your conclusion based on the information in the argument

Choice A gives the analyst information to make his prediction

Choice D is irrelevant. Even if the analyst had this information it would not help him make his prediction as you cannot extrapolate past performance or failure of some previous model and use that information to assess whether the same will hold true for the new model being sold now

Evaluate question is assmption based question. This means the correct answer choice is relative to an assumption. Is that right ?

Brother DuongThang,Its better if you approach Evaluate Questions as Weaken Questions . A weakens the question beccause the argument concludes that the company would not meet the target because its cales in the summer months are poor .
