While the ancient Egyptians maintained a veil of secrecy concerning the unique methods the employed to create their famous papyrus sheets, the most commonly used practice today has been the cutting of strips out of the sticky pith or stem of the plant, and, after allowing some decomposition to occur in water, they are hammered together to make a single sheet.

i think the answer is E as it maintains the correct parallel structure of "to cut" and "to hammer"

A the cutting of strips out of the sticky pith or stem of the plant, and, after allowing some decomposition to occur in water, they are hammered --cutting paralleled with they are hammered..wrong
B that strips were cut from the sticky pith or stem of the plant, which, after allowing some decomposition to occur in water, were hammered --wrong tenseC cutting the sticky pith or stem of the plant into strips and, after allowing some decomposition to occur in water, to hammer them ----cutting paralleled with to hammer..wrongD having strips cut from the sticky pith or stem of the plant, and, after allowing some decomposition to occur in water, they were hammered wrong tense
E to cut the sticky pith or stem of the plant into strips, and, after allowing some decomposition to occur in water, to hammer them correct

This question tests parallelism.

E is right.

E - the most commonly used practice today has been to cut the sticky pith or stem of the plant into strips, and, after allowing some decomposition to occur in water, to hammer them together to make a single sheet.
