Hello Everyone !

I have a decent work exp of 5yrs (Technology- 2yrs, Marketing/Strategy - 3yrs) and wish to pursue my MBA in Consulting. To this end, with a score of 660 in GMAT, I have managed to secure admits from MBS, UK and Schulich, Canada but I am unsure about which one to choose. I am listing here few pros and cons of each one of them.

Manchester Business School

Pros
1. Excellent Curriculum
2. Cost of MBA - Fairly low as compared to Schulich - $60,000
3. Long History and fairly Good Reputation Worldwide
4. Strong Alumni Network

Cons
1. UK Economy and Post study work visa issues...securing a job in UK is a big question mark..

Schulich Business School, Canada

Pros
1. Canadian Economy is stable and no PSW Visa hassles
2. Based out of Toronto, better work opportunities

Cons
1. Reputation is ok..not very well known across the globe
2. Cost is high - Tuition fees - $90,000
3. Relatively new b school and hence Alumni network not very strong
4. York University not very well known

Please help me decide !

Cheers

Hello Aayaam,

Firstly, Congratulations on your admits. Secondly, let me ask you What do you mean when you say that you wish to work in Consulting? Is it Consulting as a function in either your present industry or similar industry such as Internal consultant? or Is it Consulting as a function in Consulting industry working for the likes of McK/BCG/Bain/BoozAH etc?

If your goal is former, curriculum wise Manchester will suit your needs, if you target is latter, neither will fulfull it - they may however, help you achieve it ! - but it's rather a long shot. ( According to my opinion of course!)

Talk to people presently working in such companies, you'll find a pattern.... graduates from top MBA programs, several candidates with international mindset and knowledge of multiple global languages and high GMAT score.

Understand that I am not saying that yours is not ! just that when you go to either BCG or McK and wish to apply, they will ask for your GMAT / LSAT score. On those same website, you'll find a list of schools where they tend to recruit. MBS & Schulich doesn't feature there.....in fact, with the exception of LBS, INSEAD, you may want to look towards US. For other schools such as top school in Italy or Australia, they would rather take a local (due to language, visa , etc etc) than you.

In US however, they may tend to sponsor you, as you would have already proved that you are a top notch when you bagged the admit from H/W/S/Tuck/Chicago/NYU/Cornell/UCLA/Hass and the likes....

Hi,

I absolutely agree with Sorry4PartyRocking.

Management Consulting companies are very choosy & the way UK's economy is going, i am sure it will be very difficult for you to get through any of the Big 4/5/6 mainly because of Visa issues & yes GMAT score may play an important part too. However if during the program you get successful in securing an internship with any of the top consulting companies then there could be a possibility.

Schulich is not that reputed amongst the major Management Consulting companies and has no international reputation at all, it is good for other reasons. Why didn't you apply to Rotman & Queens.

Hi Aayaam,

Manchester Business School has an Asian campus in Singapore - https://singapore.portals.mbs.ac.uk/MBA ... cture.aspx, have you considered doing your studies there? You listed the UK economy and job market as the main deterrent for undertaking the program, I think your concerns are well founded, Europe is not doing well at all -

The unemployment rate in the United States was last reported at 8.2 percent in May of 2012 - tradingeconomics.com
The UK unemployment rate will rise from its current 8.3% to almost 9% by the end of this year (2012) - www.bbc.co.uk
The unemployment rate in Singapore was last reported at 2.1 percent in the first quarter of 2012. - tradingeconomics.com

I've advice a number of BTG forumers against studying in Europe or US without a careful assessment of the country's economic situation - https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba-from-fra ... tml#480612 - many of my friends in Singapore are also very eager study in the west, they've an impression that it'd be a nice experience and a change in environment - that much is true, but after graduation, many of them return to Singapore because they cannot find jobs. If many of the country's own graduates are unemployed, it's highly unlikely that international graduates would have an easier time looking for employment.

If you're open to the idea, perhaps you'd like to consider studying in Singapore, this is truly a meritocratic country, where academic abilities are placed above everything else. Here's a relevant read for you - https://www.coursesinsg.com/2012/06/5-re ... apore.html

Post MBA Concentration: Consulting, Marketing, General Management

Colleges who received my score till now:
University of Pittsburgh, Katz
Rotterdam Erasmus General Mgmt
HEC Paris, MIM
Vlerick Leuven
York Schulich

I selected my target schools on the basis of these 3 factors:
1) Cost to attend MBA
2) Reputation and Ranking
3) Employment post MBA

What are the other schools I should target? What is my chance this year at York Schulich, Texas A & M and BYU? Should i wait for 1 more year so that European colleges mainly in Germany also opens door for me? I am more keen on doing an MBA but should i also apply to MIM from HEC and Erasmus because of the reputation of these programs. What about top 50 colleges in USA and Canada? Can i get scholarship based on merit?

Kindly do the profiling and i look forward to hear from you.

Thanks in Advance
