I am leaning towards E.

B is wrong because it compares species with gender

C is wrong because we dont need unlike those.

D is awkward.

E looks good with the use of in that and shows the specific charecteristc

For me A would have been perfect if it used distinguish rather than tell apart.

tell apart = distinguish??

What is the OA? Can some one tell me whether A is correct or incorrect and why?

A is definitely incorrect because of mismatched comparison

most Red Grinder species are compared to the male and female

E seems to be the best choice here but I reserve my judgment because according to OG "in that" is not a good choice as a conjunction. (OG11 Q51)

most Red Grinder species are compared to the male and female

I say

most Red Grinder species are compared to the male and female speckled RG

which makes sense to me even though the comparison is many to one. Both of them are still RG.
