University-Faculty Numbers

A university has 2,000 faculty members all of whom have a masters degree, and some of whom also have a doctorate. 35 percent of the faculty members are female. What fraction of the faculty members are female doctorate holders?

1. 20 percent of the male faculty members have a doctorate.
2. A total of 1140 faculty members have only a masters degree.

No Male Faculty members = 1300
No of Female Faculty members = 700

1) Not Sufficient
2) Not sufficient

Combining,

1) => 260 male faculty members have doctorate
2) => 960 faculty members are doctorate holders

=> all the 700 female faculty members are doctorate holders

35% of the faculty members are female doctorate holders

Sufficient C

total no. of faculty member = 2000. (masters + doctorate)
35% are female faculty members = so total no. of female faculty members = 35/100 x 2000 = 700
St.1) 20 percent of the male faculty members have a doctorate. it don't tell about the female or total doctorate faculty members.=========== insuff
St.2) total masters degree = 1140 .so total doctorate faculty = 2000-1140 = 860
but we don't know how much of them are female and ho much of them are males..=========== insuff
combined) female doctorate holders = 860 - 700 = 160 ===========suff..
