Profile Request: Experts help needed

by Gmat0826 » Sun Mar 24, 2013 3:23 pm
Hi,

My background is a bit unique compared to most b-school aspirants. After graduating high school, I enrolled at a middle-tier city college and ended up with dismal grades before calling quits after five years with a GPA slightly below 2.0 (120 credits). Since I knew school wasn't for me, I decided to work full-time in my family-owned business. After about a year, I had a revelation and found my passion in finance, which led me to enroll in a community college and eventually graduate in the top of my program (designed as a 2-year program) after one year (by taking a combination of day-time, evening and weekend classes), while attaining a 4.0 GPA (60 credits).

After graduation, I was fortunate enough to be admitted to a top-50 undergraduate business program, a dream come true considering my circumstances. As a full-time student taking either 5 or 6 courses per semester, I was also interning every semester for various front-office positions as an intern analyst: asset management, investment banking and commercial banking. My GPA will be roughly 3.6 by graduation (would have been higher if I didn't intern 20+ hours while taking a full-course load) and I will be working in corporate finance as a full-time analyst in syndications. In terms of extracurricular activities, I joined a finance club at school (non-leadership role) and volunteered sparingly for various institutions during my time-off.

Currently I'm in the process of preparing for my GMATs and my practice exams scores are about 690-710, but I still have a few months to go, so hopefully I can push my score towards 720-740. I'm not sure how B-Schools view an applicant's age, but I will be 29 by the time I start my full-time analyst program with the hopes of attending B-school by the age of 31-32.
What type of schools will take an applicant with my background? I know the best and brightest students apply for the best schools in the country, but what are my chances? What are the reach schools and realistic schools at this point? Thank you for your time.

Hey Gmat0826 - congrats on the success story with your current GPA! Talk about a turnaround. You'll probably need to offer an explanation of the rocky road that got you to this place when you're ready to apply for bschool, but given how you redeemed yourself, both in terms of academics, and with this new career path, it's unlikely to be a major stumbling block in the long run. The schools will look at the total GPA and they'll look at the details - they'll want to understand the story behind the route that you took - but in the end, it shows that you gained some maturity and definitely some solid academic achievement, and that's what matters most.

In terms of age, 31 or 32 is not too old for an MBA, though it's definitely older than many. To some extent it depends on the school, but mostly it depends on how you present yourself, the stories you can offer of leadership and impact, and possibly your reasons for why the MBA is the right step and why you will be pursuing it at that point in your life.

Nobody can fairly answer the "what are my chances?" question, even though we understand why applicants ask it!! (We actually cover our sentiment on this in a post on our blahg, here: https://essaysnark.com/2010/07/what-are-my-chances-at/ and much more snarkily, here: https://essaysnark.com/2012/07/what-is-the-adcon/

The bottom line is that the world is open to you when it comes to applying - it completely depends on what the entirety of your profile looks like, your expression of "school fit" in why you're selecting specific schools (which is, at least in part, what your career goals are and how that school can help you achieve them), and also the "soft side" of what you're looking for in a bschool: geography, culture, class size, type of student, etc. And oh yeah, GMAT too. :-D

For some ideas on how to go about all of this, you can start here: https://essaysnark.com/selecting-schools/

It's great that you're getting started with the planning process so early. Getting into a good bschool is definitely a long and involved process. Any of the best schools might be open to your profile; it all depends on how you position yourself and why you feel you're the right candidate for them.

The next few years as an analyst will be crucial - take every advantage of opportunities that present themselves and go out and find more of your own! These are the building blocks from which your essays will be constructed and it's what the schools will be looking at closely.

If we can help in any way, feel free to hit us up - and congrats again on graduating with that 3.6, that's way impressive for anyone, and most especially given the circuitous path that you took to get there. Bravo!

Hi

Your professional journey has lots of ups and down and any B-School would be interested in hearing more from you.
Going back at the gaps (weaker aspects of your profile); you need to prepare convincing stories around - why did you made that choice, why you got dis-interested, did you try hard to better your GPAs, what is the learning from that failure etc...
Your stories would revolve around your short term/ long term career goals. Do think about it and share with us - we can help you shortlist relevant B-Schools. It may come out that, a specialized program from a top 30 B-School serves you better in terms of fulfilling your career goals than a typical MBA program. Do keep all options open.
We can also advise you upon strengthening your profile before you go for MBA application.
