D is redundant.

I would say A.

Apprentice is modifying work, (which, if it helps, includes an implied "of art.")

E.g. "It doesn't look like a novice work of art."
"It doesn't read like an apprentice book/work/etc"

E is tempting, but if you use the above examples as guides, it sounds awkward:

"It looks unlike a novice work of art."

A is much clearer.

To me the best choice is 'A' here.

It's the first novel that doesn't read like an apprentice work.

'B' changes the meaning.
'C' is redundant.
'D' is opted out for same reason as above.
'E' usage of 'But' and 'Unlike' confuses.

"it doesn't read like ..."

"It" referes to Tame Gazelle, an novel. how can a novel read? Only Person can read a novel. Can someone throw a light on this ?
