can and could choice

. Artificial intelligence emerged during the late 1950's as an academic discipline based on the assumption that computers are able to be programmed to think like people.


(A) are able to be programmed to think like people
(B) were able to be programmed to think as people
(C) can be programmed to think as people can
(D) could be programmed to think like people
(E) are capable of being programmed to think like people do


help me out ,and explain the answer why ?

IMO D

"are/were able to" Vs "Can/Could" - Can is preferred as both imply the same meaning but Can is more concise and correct.

So A, B, E not the answers.

D is correct because it compares Noun to Noun. So usage of "like" is correct.

If you are stuck between Can and Could then the presence of Can or Could does not matter as we are concerned about "AS/LIKE".
We can also say as the sentence in Past tense Could will be used.
