Confusing As/Like

by acg » Mon Jan 12, 2009 11:27 am
Hi,

Could anyone confirm if the following sentences are correct as well as the explanations given?

1- He talks like his brother does.
(This sentence is a bit confusing... I would go for AS. However, the correct answer seems to be LIKE (https://www.800score.com/guidec4view1i.html). I guess we can perfectly remove 'does' and then it would be easier to see that the comparison is between nouns (he and father) and therefore, 'like' would be the choice).

2- He read the book, as my brother did. (This sentence comes from my GMAT center strategy guide. So, for this reason, I think this sentence should be correct....)

3- He talks like his father. (Like: it compares nouns)

4- He talks as his father talks.

5- He talks as his brother does, but he walks like his father.
(AS (compares verbs): as it introduces a dependent clause. LIKE (compares nouns): As there is a comparison between two nouns (he and father).

Thanks!

Best,
