People in France consume fatty food.

Although people in France consume fatty foods at a rate comparable to the United States, their death rates from heart disease are far lower in France.

A. people in France consume fatty foods at a rate comparable to the United States
B. people in France and the United States consume fatty foods at about the same rate, the
C. fatty foods are consumed by people in France at a comparable rate to the United State's, their
D. the rate of fatty foods consumed in France and the United States is about the same, the
E. the rate of people consuming fatty foods is about the same in France and the United States, the

OA: B

I have several questions about this!

plz explain what's wrong with other options~ especially D~
Is it wrong because the rate of fatty food is wrong indication? and it uses PASSIVE voice?

Does the sentence has to parallel BEFORE and AFTER Although?

A. people in France consume fatty foods at a rate comparable to the United States
Bad comparison. This suggests that PEOPLE consume at a rate comparable to the UNITED STATES

B. people in France and the United States consume fatty foods at about the same rate, the
Good comparison. Nice active voice as well (people consume foods)

C. fatty foods are consumed by people in France at a comparable rate to the United State's, their
Passive sentence (foods are consumed). The pronoun "their" refers to fatty foods so we're talking about the foods' death rate.

D. the rate of fatty foods consumed in France and the United States is about the same, the
Super passive sentence. We don't even know who or what is consuming the foods. People? Dogs?
The "rate of fatty foods" makes no sense.

E. the rate of people consuming fatty foods is about the same in France and the United States, the
"the rate of people" doesn't make any sense.


Answer = B

Plz tell, whether the above sentence is correct ?

Please explain why the rate of fatty food consumed makes no sense.

My thinking is "fatty foods are consumed and that consumption is at a rate. "

Here, "fatty food" modifies the noun consumption.
Q: What kind of consumption?
A: Fatty food consumption.
So we can ignore the modifier to get "The rate of consumption in France . . . "
Perfect. "rate of consumption" makes sense.


"The rate of fatty food consumed"
Here, "fatty" and "consumed" are the modifiers. They modify the word "food"
Q: What kind of food?
A: The fatty and consumed kind.
When we ignore the modifiers here, we get "the rate of food"

Can someone explain more about choice C? I think the compare is ok and their refers to United States's .
