Research and development partnerships between investment funds and pharmaceutical corporations are experiencing considerable growth worldwide, even though products developed jointly by two or more corporations are less profitable than products developed by a single corporation. The advantage of research and development partnerships is that such arrangements may allow pharmaceutical firms to create successful products that would otherwise be too costly to develop.

Which of the following is information provided by the passage above?


(A) Product development is too costly for a single corporation to fund without research and development partnerships.
(B) Product development partnerships between pharmaceutical corporations and investment funds are more common now than they were in the recent past.
(C) Product development partnerships lead to products of higher quality.

Which of the following is information provided by the passage above?

I can discard B, D, and E (as highlighted in red).
Between A and C, C has a term "Quality", which I cannot say how the author is trying to define it. If the term "Higher Quality" means Successful or More costly.
So, IMO A

Actually even I selected A but the OA: B. I am not sure how.

PREMISE : The advantage of research and development partnerships is that such arrangements may allow pharmaceutical firms to create successful products that would otherwise be too costly to develop.



(A) Product development is too costly for a single corporation to fund without research and development partnerships. - Stated with possibility this optiondepicts surety .

(B) Product development partnerships between pharmaceutical corporations and investment funds are more common now than they were in the recent past. - Premise bold part infers the trend as recent development

I was very tempted picking A , but gave a second thought and caught glimpse of word "may". Is this knewton problem ? If yes then i liked their style of framing questions that compell to read minutely and pick the words those go unnoticed .

AIM,
I completely agree wth choice A. It states blatantly tht it IS too costly.
but wth option B i interpreted the premise as follows:
"Research and development partnerships between investment funds and pharmaceutical corporations are experiencing considerable growth worldwide" - this only says that they are experiencing considerable growth now - it only talks about the growth, may be they were in existence from long but the growth has been a recnet phenomenon.

but option B clearly says " Product development partnerships between pharmaceutical corporations and investment funds are more common now than they were in the recent past" - that they are common now.

or do we need to look at it this way: as the growth is considerable in recent times, they have become more common? coz the premise no where states their EXISTENCE is more common now,(that is what option B mentions)

Help me out in my thought process!!

Patnership is experiencing growth => more patnerships

And the 2nd premise states that

The advantage of research and development partnerships is that such arrangements may allow pharmaceutical firms to create successful products that would otherwise be too costly to develop.

=> apart from not so costly products patnership may allow to develop costly product also .

Yes this from Knewton. I am not happy with B and still consider that the question is wrongly framed, because B talks of only a part of the given premise. A on the other hand seems to cover more of the information given in the premise.
