Quick Profile Review

by Obsessed » Fri Apr 01, 2011 5:52 pm
So my profile is

Female Hispanic,31
B.A. UCSB Geography, 3.4 GPA
M.S. Montana State Land Resources and Environmental Science, 3.4 GPA
3 years WE for major Defense Contractor
TS/SCI
CAPM Certification from Project Management Institute
ASPRS Certified Mapping Scientist
2 peer reviewed journal Publication
Mother of 3

I am looking into an MBA. I have decided that I want to more than just a low-level management. I am, however, not management. I work as a Geospatial Analyst in Research and Development (income is 54K). I would like to pursue a career in the energy sector and am looking into UT or UCLA or USC. I am working on my GMAT now for application in the Fall 11-12.

So am I too old? Will I be a viable candidate if I don't have management experience? What are my chance of actually getting a decent job when I get out that will validate the expense of a MBA?

Thank

Obsessed,
Fewer than 10% of accepted applicants at top programs have more than 7.3 years of work experience (age ~29), so your age is an issue but if you are not limiting yourself to top programs or if you are open to part-time or executive programs your age will be less of an issue.

Your gender and cultural background are very strong assets for you. Assuming your can score above, say, a 670 and can show some leadership over time outside of work (given that you have little at work), you may have a shot at UT, USC or UCLA (UCLA being the longest shot). Given your age and lack of workplace leadership I would say you are a 'reach' for these schools.

ROI for all of these schools is fairly good -- see Forbes' magazines rankings of business schools by ROI.

Hope this helps,

Thanks. Well that is not what I wanted to hear. I guess I needed to hear it. I will try my hand at the GMAT and see where I can place.
